NEW Releases at the LCBO

We're excited for these special new releases from South Africa's Swartland, and Italy's Sardegna this month.

Lukas Van Loggerenberg (pictured above), named Tim Atkin MW’s Young Winemaker of the Year in 2018, is a premier South African producer to watch, known for his elegant, site-expressive, and low-intervention wines. Based in Paarl, he crafts, with great precision, standout Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch and Swartland, consistently producing some of the country’s most lauded, terroir-driven, and highly rated wines.

Van Loggerenberg Wines High Hopes 2023

"The 2023 High Hopes does not include any Cinsault this year, with the Syrah whole-bunch-fermented using submerged cap and aged in concrete, foudre and 300-liter French oak. It has a perfumed nose with wilted rose petal, peony and light loamy scents, tightly wound red berry fruit and hints of bergamot that develop with time. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, a wonderful silver thread of acidity and a pure, Côte-Rôtie finish - black olive tapenade on the aftertaste. Superb. Drinking window: 2026-2046.95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

Van Loggerenberg Kameraderie Chenin Blanc 2022

"Van Loggerenberg Wines is a family-run winery based in Paarl, making low-intervention, site-specific wines from vineyards mainly in the Stellenbosch and Swartland appellations. Lukas Van Loggerenberg is one of SA's top indie winemakers, and a hit with somms and media worldwide. Kameraderie (camaraderie, in Afrikaans) was named for the connections between friends, farmer, workers, vineyards, and vines. This is dryland bush vines planted in 1966 and 1980 on decomposed granite vineyards on the western side of Swartland's Paardeberg. Destemmed grapes were pressed and left to settle overnight in stainless before the oldest grapes (80% of the blend) were native fermented in Italian concrete, and the younger in 500L French barrels. Each parcel was left on lees for 10 months without bâtonnage. Stencilled and structural, with a lemon lattice bracing, and crushed stones lining the taut palate of elderflower, quince, wild lemon, and dried green herbs. The finish lingers super long with stony salinity. So much energy and complexity here, making for a fascinating wine to unravel." 95 points, Gismondi On Wine

This charming wine from Silvio Carta is made from Cagnulari, a rare indigenous Sardinian grape variety. Delightful aromas of ripe cherries, tart cranberries and dried flowers lead to a fuller mouthfeel with fruity, spicy and savoury notes. Try it with roasted red meats or meaty pasta dishes.
