Fattoria Selvapiana
Fattoria Selvapiana
Chianti Rufina, Toscana, Italy
In Medieval times, Selvapiana was one of the watch towers along the river Sieve built to protect the city of Florence on the North-East border. During the Renaissance, the building was enlarged and transformed into a villa suitable as a summer residence for noble Florentine families, and the bishops of Florence. In 1827, Selvapiana was acquired by Michele Giuntini, a successful banker and ancestor of Francesco Giuntini, the present owner and fifth generation to run the property from 1957 through to 1997.
Federico Giuntini grew up at Selvapiana. His father was the estate manager from 1950 to 1990, and Federico always wanted to work at the estate. Francesco, owner of Selvapiana, never married, and always considered Federico and his sister like family, so in 1994, Francesco legally adopted them, continuing the family tradition. Since 2018, Federico’s son, Niccolo, has become the winemaker at the estate. The vines are certified organic.
Here is a video in which Federico introduces Selvapiana, and the region of Rufina, its history and characteristics.

Chianti Rufina
Rufina is the smallest appellation in Chianti, extending across 750 hectares. This is 95% Sangiovese, joined with tips of Canaiolo, Colorino, and Malvasia Nera from well-drained, dry and stony north and north-west facing vineyards. These 15-40 year old vines grow in medium density clay and limestone at 200-300m. Fermentation and maceration occurs in stainless over 25 days with native yeast, before aging 75% in cement, 10% in foudre, and 15% in stainless.
Bright and lifted cherry, ripe raspberry is kissed with wild orange, and dosed liberally with flake salts. Tannins are fine and sticky, hugging this medium red to a gently spiced finish. A subtle and pretty Rufina, ready to enjoy now with fragrant mushroom dishes.
“Bright and fragrant with floral notes, red berries, orange peel and a touch of wild herbs. Linear and juicy with crunchy tannins and a crisp, citrus-laced finish. Drink now or hold.” - 91 points, JamesSuckling, July 15, 2025
