Vignoble du Rêveur
Alsace, France
Mathieu Deiss, who works with his father Jean-Michel at the winery Marcel DEISS, created Vignoble du Rêveur in 2013. Translating as ‘The Dreamer’s Winery’, Mathieu farms grapes from the vineyard of his maternal uncle, Cassien Mischler, who unfortunately became ill in 2011 and unable to take care of the vines. The independent winery’s 7 hectares are located in Alsace’s Bennwihr. Together with his wife Emmanuelle Milan, they are fulfilling their dream to make natural wines that transcend the limits of grape variety, through innovative vinification and maceration, aging in amphora, and bottling without filtration or sulphur.

Artisan
This orange of Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris comes from 40 year old vines rooted in their biodynamic Bennwihr estate. This was native fermented in stainless, where it rested on lees for one year until bottling with light filtration and a minimum of sulphur. Pouring a hazy peach orange hue, this is potent with apricot blossoms, pear skin, wild flowers, ash, on a savoury, super juicy palate. There's a lovely grip holding in the sides, guiding this to a gently spiced finish. As with all their wines, this is understated, and memorable.

Pierres Sauvages
This is a blend of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir, from 40 year old vines rooted in their biodynamic Bennwihr estate. This was native fermented in foudre, where it rested on lees for one year until bottling with light filtration and a minimum of sulphur. Honeysuckle, pear skin, yellow apple, wild flowers stream along the dry palate, juicy with mouthwatering salinity, and finely gripped along the sides. Lovely trio of pinots.

Vibrations Riesling
This Riesling comes from 40 year old vines rooted in their biodynamic Bennwihr estate. Ten percent was macerated on skins for 10 days, and then blended back with the whole for a native ferment in foudre, where it rested on lees for 1 year until bottling with light filtration and a minimum of sulphur. Honeyed lemon, tangerine, lime pith, grapefruit streak through this tight and nimble dry wine, with an undercurrent of grippy granite, and perfume of wildflowers that lingers on the finish. Understated, yet, profound, with killer Riesling acidity that sings.

Un Instant sur Terre Amphora
Pouring a deep, hazy orange hue, this is 50% Pinot Gris, 40% Gewurztraminer, 10% Riesling, from 40 year old vines, macerated for 8 months in clay and sandstone amphora on skins, with an additional 3 months in clay amphora without skins. This was bottled without filtration or sulphur. Intense and full in the mouth, but with an amazing salinity and freshness, this dry wine teems with bergamot, white tea, mineral salts, honeycomb, and apricot. There's a firm, fine stencilling of tannins housing this to the lengthy finish. Beautiful harmony throughout.

La Vigne en Rose
This off-dry blend of Gewürztraminer and Riesling comes from 40-year-old vines rooted in their biodynamic Bennwihr estate. Ten percent of the Gewürztraminer was macerated on skins for ten days and then blended back with the whole for a native ferment in stainless, where it rested on lees until bottling with light filtration and a minimum of sulphur. Gew's aromatics are at the fore here, with ample apricot, honeysuckle, peach gliding along the juicy, waxen palate. There's a fantastic grippy salinity framing this, and a buoyant juicy acidity carrying this demi-sec to the ginger-spiced finish. Classic Alsace, revisited. Impressive.

Imagine
This is an off-dry blend of Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Muscat and Pinot Gris, part of which has macerated with the skins for 10 days. Mouth filling tangerine, mandarin, gingersnap, ripe pear, lime blossoms fill the palate, pleasantly textured by the time on skins. The RS is smartly balanced by Riesling's limey acidity, driving this to the spiced finish. A weightier wine that belies its 13.5 degrees.

Singulier
Vignoble du Reveur is the project of Mathieu Deiss (who also still makes wines for his father's Domaine Marcel Deiss). This dry Alsatian orange is a carbonic maceration coferment of Riesling and Pinot Gris, with 10 days on skins prior to a native ferment in large oak barrels, without any additions. The wine aged for one year on fine lees prior to bottling with a very low level of sulfites. Pouring a hazy, deeper orange gold hue, this medium+ orange floods the textural palate with bergamot, pear skin, grapefruit, exotic spices, beeswax, gently framed with buzzy oolong tea tannins. Very complete, this is a stunner.
