April Releases at the LCBO
We have two new wines launching in the LCBO this week. Visit the LCBO's Classics Collection on Thursday, April 1 for the Champagne Gosset, and shop at your neighbourhood LCBO for Saturday's Napa Cabernet release.
Champagne Gosset Grand Millesime Brut Champagne 2012
Founded in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset, Champagne Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. For 17 generations Gosset was owned by the founding family. In 1993, the company was sold to another legendary French wine family, the Cointreau family from Charente, owners of Frappin Cognac. The long history and high quality of the house earned Gosset the French government award of Living Heritage Company in 2013, making it one of only two such Champagne Houses to be recognized in this way.
Across all their wines, their house style is consistently linear, focused and precise. They do not use oak, nor employ malolactic fermentation, ensuring a structure built on purity of fruit, minerality, and long aging. Gosset has pioneered age-dated champagnes, much like whisky producers.
"Since Gosset makes a point of commercializing wines only when they deem them ready, the 2012 Grand Millésime Brut will be released at the end of this year, while the 2010 and 2008 continue to wait in the wings. The wine is still quite tightly wound after its recent disgorgement, unfurling in the glass with a youthful bouquet of warm biscuits, apple, lemon and peach that picks up a more pronounced smoky top note as the wine sits in the glass. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and powerful, with a deep and concentrated core, incisive acids and a precise, saline finish. This is a muscular vintage of the Grand Millésime that seems likely to evolve slowly. Drink date: 2020-2040." 94+ points, William Kelley, robertparker.com

Caterwaul Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Caterwaul is a collaborative project between Thomas Rivers Brown and Matt Hardon. Thomas Rivers Brown is the winemaker for some of Napa and Sonoma’s most iconic labels (Schrader Cellars, Outpost and his own Rivers-Marie), and has more than twenty 100-point wines on his resume. Matt Hardin, a 6th generation Napa resident and farmer, is partner in Barbour Vineyards and owns one of the most renowned vineyard management companies in Northern California.
"Moving to the barrel samples, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon should be snatched up by savvy readers. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, violets, and tobacco, it's a step up over the 2017 and has sweet tannins, no hard edges, and a terrific sense of opulence as well as freshness." 93-95 points, Jeb Dunnuck,jebdunnuck.com.
