March CLASSICS Release

On Thursday, March 4, we're thrilled to have these two rare, prized wines in the LCBO CLASSICS release.

Château Caillou Grand Cru Classé Private Cuvée Sauternes 1997

Château Caillou is one of the jewels of Sauternes, ranked 2nd Grand Cru Classé in the official classification of Bordeaux wines of 1855. Family owned from the beginning, Château Caillou passed from the Sarraute family to the Ballan family in 1909, and today is overseen by the third generation, Marie Josee Pierre, a direct descendant of the Ballan family.

Caillou, meaning rock, refers to the unusual subsoils of large rock and boulders that fill the property, basing the gravel, clay and limestone soils of the 18 hectare estate. The vineyards, planted on the peak of a slope, are 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, with vines nearing 40 years of age, and planted to a vine density of 5,500 vines per hectare.

Their location in Haut-Barsac affords them the perfect conditions for noble rot, which they achieve consistently on their Semillon, and which allows them to make such finessed and age-worthy sweet wines. After several passes through the vineyard and pneumatic pressing, vinification takes place in a combination of stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels. The wine is aged in 60% new French oak barrels for 24-30 months prior to release.

We're proud to represent this historic property and bring you a rare example of 20+ year old vintage Sauternes.

Au Sommet Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, Napa Valley

Au Sommet is a partnership between Heidi Peterson Barrett, John Schwartz and Jim Barbour and is a Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot blend from their seven acre vineyard on top of Atlas Peak in the acclaimed Napa Valley.

Heidi Peterson Barrett grew up in a family of innovators in Napa Valley, with her scientist-winemaker father and her artist mother. It seems destined that Heidi has become one of California’s top winemaking talents. She spent her teenage summers in wineries and vineyards, taking on all jobs from sorting vine cuttings to working the bottling line. She continued her winemaking education formally at UC Davis, becoming an assistant to Dr. Ann Noble, the developer of the aroma wheel. After graduating from UC Davis in 1980 with a B.S. Degree in Fermentation Science, she worked for Justin Meyer at Franciscan Vineyards, and Silver Oak until 1983, at age 25, when Heidi became winemaker at Buehler Vineyards. In 1988 she became an independent freelance winemaker, taking over projects like Dalla Valle Vineyards, where she consulted until spring 1996. It was at Dalla Valle that Heidi really carved out her signature style in creating powerful, elegant Cabernets, including the famous Maya cult wine, which received two 100-point scores from Robert Parker. In 1992, she began making wine for Screaming Eagle, which has also received two 100-point scores.

Since 1988, Heidi has developed an impressive client list of ultra-premium wineries. In addition to her own wines from La Sirena, she is currently the winemaker for Amuse Bouche, Au Sommet, and Vin Perdu, the latter three alongside partner, friend, and vigneron John Schwartz.

"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon gives up exuberant crushed blackcurrants, warm plums, wild blueberries and cloves with suggestions of violets, tilled black soil, tar, chargrill and cedar chest with a waft of unsmoked cigars. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm, grainy and refreshing with incredible intensity, finishing very long and earthy." - 96+ points, Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, October 2018

Appellation : AVA Napa Valley
Region: California, USA
Grape(s) : 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot
Price : $610 for 750mL
