Zantho Reserve Zweigelt 2017

Zantho is a joint venture of Austrian star vintner Josef Umathum with Wolfgang Peck. The winery produces red, white, and sweet wines on 70ha of vineyards in the warm and dry Seewinkel region, characterized by dry, gritty, and mineral soils. This was native fermented in stainless, before finishing in oak barrels (60% new) for 15 months. A flinty note of reduction hovers above the ripe, fleshy aromas of red and black cherries. The palate drives home the ripe and abundant cherry fruit on a concentrated, ripe but still fresh palate. The finish has ample fruit but also levity. Zantho is an old Hungarian word meaning ‘farmland’, or ‘stoney, barren soil’.

"Ripe, fleshy red cherry notes on the nose promise a full-fruited wine. The palate duly delivers a mouthful of cherry juiciness that presents a most harmonious equilibrium of fruit, fine tannins, freshness and body. This is Zweigelt rendered with elegance and sinuousness in all its fruitiness." 93 points, Anne Krebiehl, MW, Wine Enthusiast.
