MIXED CASE : Seasonal Selections

Each case contains two bottles of the following wines:

Domaine Vendange Crémant de Savoie Grande Réserve NV, Savoie, France. $36
Located in Combe de Savoie, on the foothills of the Massif des Bauges, Domaine Vendange stretches over 10 organically farmed hectares, on south facing slopes of youthful glacial till / limestone scree. The Vendange family has been involved with the viticulture and agronomic industries for many years, and are one of the largest vine nurseries in the region. After studying viticulture and oenology in Beaune, Benjamin Vendange returned in 2015 to the family property. With his partner Diane Gounel, oenologist from Languedoc-Roussillon, the step was taken to start their own estate with the family’s holdings. This crémant blends Jacquère (45%), Altesse (30%), Chardonnay (25%) of 25 year old vines, with vinification in stainless over 9 months with bâtonnage, prior to a secondary ferment in bottle for a minimum of one year on lees. Crisp and dry, with toasted biscuit, red apple, and pithy lemon, licked with anise, and lined with fine lees that linger on the saline finish. Really smart Crémant, and great value too.

Fanti Soralisa Bianco 2024, Toscana, Italy. $28
The Tenuta Fanti estate has belonged to the Fanti family since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It extends across 300 hectares in Toscana, 52 hectares of which are specialized certified sustainable vineyards, 60 hectares are olive orchards with 8,500 olive trees, 80 hectares are used for seed plots, and 70 hectares are forests. In the early 1970s, Filippo Fanti became leader of the company, and refocused its direction towards high quality, starting with the soils. Filippo’s 40+ years of experience as wine-grower was complemented by the energy and determination of his winemaker daughter Elisa, who joined the family company in 2007, and more recently by second daughter Elena. This blend of 45% Vermentino, 45% Viognier, 5% Malvasia Toscana and 5% Trebbiano Toscano was from clay soils around 210-370m, and vines ranging from 10-30 years. It was fermented and rested in stainless on lees until the following spring. Fragrant yellow fruits are met with fresh green herbs and crushed white peppercorns in this intriguing blend, one that buzzes along the palate to a snappy tangerine twist. Quite smart, and certainly unique, and a lovely choice for grilled calamari or fritto misto di verdure.

Podere 414 Flower Power Rosato 2024, Toscana, Italy. $25
Podere 414 is a certified organic estate with 13ha of vines, situated in western Tuscany, straddling a river near the town of Scansano. This charming, dry rosato of early-harvested Sangiovese was fermented cool in stainless, where it remained until bottling in spring 2024.Pale salmon hue, this streams wild strawberries, crunchy cherry, and stony notes along a sleek, bright frame, with savoury swings of earthy lees keeping this interesting.

Olivier Coste Orange Star 2024, Languedoc, France. $24
Since his childhood, Olivier Coste’s favourite places to play have been the vineyards and the family wine cellar at Domaine Montrose, his family’s wine estate founded in 1701 in Pézenas. With this upbringing, Olivier developed a profound attachment to the Languedoc’s terroir and landscape, and later to its wines. Olivier and his team are committed to respecting the environment so that future generations can enjoy nature’s heritage. As you can assume from the name, and the glowing orange hue, Orange Star is an organic skin contact blend of 90% Muscat à Petits Grains and 10% Grenache Gris from their Faugères estate, with 7 days’ maceration before blending and a 6 month stint in stainless. Highly perfumed tangerine, pink grapefruit, Asian pear, and pear blossom are stencilled on the slight palate, with an alluring buzzy hum through a pithy bergamot finish. Smart and snappy.

Niepoort NAT'Cool! Tinto 2024, Bairrada, Portugal. $26 for 1000mL
Dirk Niepoort's NAT'Cool! range of wines were created to meet certain criteria : be made as naturally as possible, be low alcohol, be terroir-driven, use native grapes to the region, be affordable, and be so smashable that it's only sold in 1L bottles. This lighter, shining red is 40-100 year old Baga vines from the limestone laced, clay soils of Bairrada. This was native fermented and aged in stainless, to preserve the purity of fruit. Wild cherry, perfumed raspberry, crushed herbs teem throughout this lifted, fresh red, with fine, long tannins taking this through a saline finish. Such a charmer, and best enjoyed with a slight chill.

Luis Seabra Xisto Ilimitado Tinto 2021, Douro, Portugal. $32
Ilimitado is a soil survey of the schist-driven terroir in the Douro, regardless of grapes. This year, field blends of grapes from Cotas and Ervedosa do Douro in the Cima Corgo were sourced, with vines between 35 and 60 years, planted in Patamares and large terraces from 400-550m, predominantly on loamy clays and yellow slate. 40% of the grapes were fermented whole cluster in lagares, foot trodden, with 8-10 days maceration. The remaining 70% fermented whole cluster in stainless tanks, with 20 to 30 days maceration. Both lots aged for 14 months in used French barrels. Scrubby herbs, fragrant rockrose, wild blackberry, and juicy plum are woven throughout the medium palate, pinned by finely grippy / schistous tannins and lofted by elevation, finishing with a graphite ferrous kiss. Super smart snapshot, drinking beautifully now and with time ahead.
