Domaine Vendange Crémant de Savoie Grande Réserve NV, Savoie, France. $36
Located in Combe de Savoie, on the foothills of the Massif des Bauges, Domaine Vendange stretches over 10 organically farmed hectares, on south facing slopes of youthful glacial till / limestone scree. The Vendange family has been involved with the viticulture and agronomic industries for many years, and are one of the largest vine nurseries in the region. After studying viticulture and oenology in Beaune, Benjamin Vendange returned in 2015 to the family property. With his partner Diane Gounel, oenologist from Languedoc-Roussillon, the step was taken to start their own estate with the family’s holdings. This crémant blends Jacquère (45%), Altesse (30%), Chardonnay (25%) of 25 year old vines, with vinification in stainless over 9 months with bâtonnage, prior to a secondary ferment in bottle for a minimum of one year on lees. Crisp and dry, with toasted biscuit, red apple, and pithy lemon, licked with anise, and lined with fine lees that linger on the saline finish. Really smart Crémant, and great value too.

Perlage Zharpí Prosecco Brut NV, DOC Prosecco Treviso, Veneto, Italy. $22
Perlage is one of Italy’s first organic sparkling wineries. In the local dialect, zharpì is a term transcribed as vine pruning, reflecting this wine’s connection to the vineyard and those who work the vines. This Glera is bright and shining with pear blossoms, white peach, and tangerine, finishing crisp and thankfully dry. A very smart and modern take.

Fanti Soralisa Bianco 2024, Toscana, Italy. $28
The Tenuta Fanti estate has belonged to the Fanti family since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It extends across 300 hectares in Toscana, 52 hectares of which are specialized certified sustainable vineyards, 60 hectares are olive orchards with 8,500 olive trees, 80 hectares are used for seed plots, and 70 hectares are forests. In the early 1970s, Filippo Fanti became leader of the company, and refocused its direction towards high quality, starting with the soils. Filippo’s 40+ years of experience as wine-grower was complemented by the energy and determination of his winemaker daughter Elisa, who joined the family company in 2007, and more recently by second daughter Elena. This blend of 45% Vermentino, 45% Viognier, 5% Malvasia Toscana and 5% Trebbiano Toscano was from clay soils around 210-370m, and vines ranging from 10-30 years. It was fermented and rested in stainless on lees until the following spring. Fragrant yellow fruits are met with fresh green herbs and crushed white peppercorns in this intriguing blend, one that buzzes along the palate to a snappy tangerine twist. Quite smart, and certainly unique, and a lovely choice for grilled calamari or fritto misto di verdure.

Aphros Loureiro 2023, DOC Vinho Verde, Portugal. $30
Vasco Croft is one of the pioneering biodynamic vintners in Portugal, and Aphros is his personal project. From Vinho Verde's Lima subregion, this Loureiro spent time on skins before pressing into stainless for native fermentation (no MLF) and a few months ageing on lees (no bâtonnage) before filtration and bottling. Very lean and light (10.5%) with crunchy green apple, Asian pear, green spring veg streaking across a slight, saline frame, finishing with a white grapefruit twist. Enjoy this snappy little white with fish / veg tapas. 

J.M. Raffault Chinon Rouge Les Picasses 2020, AOC Chinon, Loire, France. $27
Jean-Maurice Raffault and Rodolphe Raffault’s family began cultivating vines in Chinon 14 generations ago, when their ancestor, Mathurin Bottreau, bought his first parcel of vines in 1693. Today, Domaine Jean-Maurice Raffault owns 50 organically farmed hectares of vines in 7 communes. This certified organic Cabernet Franc is from the Les Picasses lieu dit, atop a plateau overlooking the Vienne, the windiness of the site reflected in the windmill on the label. Vines have been planted here since the 15th century. Soils here are stony limestone and clay. After destemming and a native ferment, with one month skin contact, this moves to barriques for MLF and aging 12 months on fine lees. Super perfumed, with ample fragrant plums, wild blackberry, thorns, and crushed florals on a medium palate, gripped with ample firm, gritty tannins, and finishing with a lingering peppery note. Lovely lift and freshness, encouraging partnering this with food (think grilled sausages).

Niepoort Vertente Tinto 2021, DOC Douro, Portugal. $34
If one had to pick the winemaker that has had the greatest impact on not only Douro wines, but Portuguese wines in general, it would be Dirk Niepoort. Easily one of the world’s top winemakers, Dirk’s insight extends beyond soils, grapes and blends, and into humans, predicting and driving the wines that today’s wine lovers, of all ages and backgrounds, are interested in drinking. Vertente means aspect or hillside, well named for the vineyards of the Douro. 50 to 80 year old vines are sourced from all of the vineyards the family works with, with a traditional blend of several grape varieties predominantly based on Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Rufete, and Tinta Amarela. After a native ferment in stainless, this was aged in French oak for 22 months. Fragrant rockrose, scrubby herbs, wild blackberries, and black plum flood a juicy palate, with a fine, schistous, structural brace of tannins that guide this 13% red to a lingering stony finish. Still so much energy in this wine, and time ahead.
