Antiyal

In 1996, winemaker Alvaro Espinoza and his family planted two acres of vines around their home in Maipo. In 2003, they planted their El Escorial estate in the rocky volcanic / basaltic soils of the Andean foothills with over 25 acres organic / biodynamic vines at 500m. Pura Fe means Pure Faith. This year's Antiyal is 54% Carmenere, followed by Cab Sauv and Syrah. This was native fermented in large stainless over 25 days followed by 18 months in French barrel, 50% new. 5% of this was aged in cement egg. Potent medicinal black cherry, kirsch, blackberry is framed with firm, structural tannins, now absorbed into the dense fruit. Acidity is lofted via altitude, able to carry the heft of this full bodied red through the spiced, kirsch slicked finish. Definitely a wine for grilled fare, now, and in future.

"The nose of the 2017 Antiyal reveals plenty of sweet spices and ripe berries with a strong imprint from the Carmenere, which represents 45% of the blend—the rest is 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Syrah. It's a classical Maipo blend that comes through as powerful but harmonious, with elegant tannins, overcoming the shortages of the year. Austere finish. 5,000 bottles were filled in February 2019. Drink 2021-2025.” - 93 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate.
