Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gautronnières
Domaine Bonnet-Huteau, nestled in La Chapelle-Heulin, in the heart of Muscadet’s Sèvre et Maine appellation, has been producing Muscadet for over 150 years. Today it is run by the Bonnet brothers, Jean-Jacques and Rémi. This 42 hectare vineyard has been certified organic since 2005, and biodynamic since 2010. They’ve divided their Melon de Bourgogne into parcels to highlight the nuances and subtlety of their individual terroirs, and their focus is on producing pure, fresh, Muscadet.
From 20-30 year old vines and profoundly rocky clays and amphibolite fossil-rich volcanic soils, Les Gautronnières was native fermented in stainless, with full MLF and 9 months on lees. Bright and shining Asian pear, green apple, pear blossom stream through the sleek palate, gently textured via the profound soils, and easily lofted with maritime acidity through a lingering saline finish. Super smart now, and with time ahead.
“All creamy, wet stones, lime and lemon curd on the nose and palate, with more exotic white pepper, cumin and caraway notes slipping in, this is a fascinating example of Muscadet with complexity far above the mean. The palate shows considerable carbon dioxide locked in, which ups the freshness so no issue, but you could decant if you want to dissipate. Length is excellent. Precise, tightly framed, impeccably made, good grapes, good terroir. Has more than a minor Chablisienne feel to it. Drink or hold into the early '30s - stuffing to last. Tasted May 2025.” - 92 points, John Szabo, MS, WineAlign.com
"This is a very stylish and delicious muscadet. It is pristine and well balanced with just a hint of rounding sweetness. The nose shows generous grapefruit/lemon, fine fresh herbs and salty sea breeze. It is medium weight, very tidy and in a sense mellow, which I rarely use to describe Muscadet. The length is excellent. Something a bit new from the region and I like it. Tasted May 2025.” - 92 points, David Lawrason, WineAlign.com
"Organic and biodynamic, 100 percent melon de bourgogne from 20 to 30 year-old Muscadet vines and lower yields than many. Great energy and haute style for the area with that extra level of pulpy fruit and pulse for a terrific drinking experience. Possessive of this curious tonic or bitters spirit at the finish that most melon just do not display. Wishing for just one iota more of acidity to fully justify the price but otherwise a most promising regional wine up at a higher level. Drink 2025-2028. Tasted May 2025.” - 92 points, Michael Godel, WineAlign.com
