Athene, always a highlight of the BOV portfolio, blends equal parts syrah with cabernet sauvignon in 2020, primarily from the Burrowing Owl Vineyard A8 block on the Black Sage Bench. The destemmed fruit was cofermented before moving to French, American, and Hungarian barrels for 18 months' rest. Showing very smartly, with peppery wild black cherry, blackberry, and dark earth across a structural palate, scented with wild thorns, bacon fat, and smouldering smoked stones. Tannins are very well managed, fine and firm, making this drinkable now, and with time ahead.
