Gómez Cruzado
Crianza Rioja
Gómez Cruzado operates out of their 135-year-old cellar (founded 1886) in the Station District in Haro, the historic heart of Rioja. The bodega focuses on sustainably farmed old vine plots and indigenous varieties. This crianza blends 80% Tempranillo from vineyards in the foothills of the Cantabrias, and 20% Garnacha from the Upper Najerilla (Badarán), rooted in the region's alluvial, sandstone ferrous clays. It was native fermented in stainless before one year in primarily new American barriques. Fragrant scrubby herbs are woven throughout the wild raspberry, cherry on the medium palate, with fresh, bright acidity to lift, and long, finely sticky tannins to structure. The long finish hums with crushed stones and pink peppercorn. Such a lovely, finessed and pure Rioja.
"The more classical red 2020 Crianza is quite impressive for the vintage. It is a bright ruby color and has an expressive nose redolent of flowers, wild herbs and spices and a medium-bodied palate with a fine thread, very fine tannins and a supple finish. It was produced with a blend of 74% Tempranillo from the Sierra Cantabria and 25% Garnacha from Badarán, bottled with 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.65. It matured in 225-liter oak barrels, 85% of them French and 15% American. Truly delicious. 150,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023. Drink 2024 - 2029.” - 92 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, Feb 29, 2024
