Zuri Blanco

Florentino Martinez Monje started off life as a grape supplier before deciding to set up his own winery in Rioja Alavesa. Few know as much about the region as he does, nor how to get the best out of the local vineyards. With an intimate understanding of the 32 hectares he farms, he remains a farmer first and foremost. This is a blend of Viura and Malvasia, from 30 to 50 year old vineyards located in Elciego and adjacent villages, fermented and rested in stainless where it remained for two months with daily bâtonnage. Fragrant white peach, melon, is lit with green apple acidity, matched with a light buffer of lees. The finish lingers with a buzz of crushed stones. A lovely fresh view of white Rioja.

“A blend of viura and malvasia from the Familia Monje Amestoy in Elciego, Rioja. Botanical aromas at first, then salty white meats and pencil shavings. Feels like a white that would pair well with fungi and/or truffles, in season of course. Not lean by any stretch but there is a linear, focused and composed stylistic and the wine is anything but fruity or fleshy. Sautéed hericium, fall oysters and white pizzas would all make for fine culinary matches. Drink 2023-2025. Tasted August 2023.” 90 points, Michael Godel, WineAlign

“Made in a very youthful fresh style without oak ageing, this a blend of high acid viura with more floral, soft malvasia. The nose shows clean, pure green apple, lemon and a touch of minty herbality. It is slender, brisk and lively with very good flavour intensity and focus, with a lemony and mineral finish. Quite delightful. Tasted August 2023”. 90 points, David Lawrason, WineAlign
