Sesti
Brunello di Montalcino 2016

Giuseppe Maria “Giugi” Sesti did not initially choose a career in wine. Instead, his Venetian upbringing inspired him to study music, art, and astronomy, the last of which became his profession. After marrying, he moved his family to Tuscany, where they bought the abandoned ruins of the hamlet and castle of Argiano, all 102 hectares, on southern boarder of Siena. He started planting vines in 1991, and his four children grew up amidst the vines. In 1999 daughter Elisa joined the estate full time to take care of the 9 hectares of viticulture and winemaking. This sangiovese comes from sandy marine soils at 350m, was fermented over 2 weeks in stainless and then aged in Slavonian oak for 3 years, followed by two years of bottle age. Wild raspberry, wild cherry, worked leather, tobacco is scented with dried florals, and lit with ample buzzy minerals underneath. Tannins are firm and grippy, housing this savoury red through a lingering saline / scrubby rosemary finish. Quite finessed, with great presence, this has a ways to go yet.

“The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Sesti pulls you close to the glass, with a display of woodland herbs and strawberries backed by hints of cedar and stone dust. It’s a silky and pliant, complemented by bright red fruits and cooling acidity, as inner violet and lavender tones add further depth. Energy remains high through the juicy finale, even as round tannins slowly dry out the expression. This is very nicely balanced and so giving already that it will be hard to keep our hands off long enough to watch it fully mature. Drink 2023-2032.” - 94 points, Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2020.
