Niepoort Vinhos
Douro Valley, Portugal
If one had to pick the winemaker that has had the greatest impact on not only Douro wines, but Portuguese wines in general, it would be Dirk Niepoort. Easily one of the world’s top winemakers, Dirk’s insight extends beyond soils, grapes and blends, and into humans, predicting and driving the wines that today’s wine lovers, of all ages and backgrounds, are interested in drinking.
While upholding his family’s history in Port wine, dating back to 1842, this fifth generation Niepoort has led the path for future generations to follow in both dry and Port wines. Independent, low-interventionist winemaking (biodynamic practices since 2012), earlier picking times, and clever marketing has created fresh wines both inside and outside of the bottle. There is little Dirk’s ceaseless mind hasn’t touched: natural, sparkling, and highly experimental wine, the latter category being labelled either as ‘undrinkable’, or ‘incredible’ by well-known wine critics. The soft-spoken Dirk deftly combines tradition with innovation, equally using granite lagares and ancient autochthonous grapes alongside sharp social media, alliances with artists, and collaborations with other winemakers around the world (including our own Suertes del Marqués from Tenerife), through his Niepoort Projectos projects, and the natural, smashable, NAT’Cool! wines.

NAT’Cool! Branco
NAT’Cool is Dirk Niepoort's line of wines that are low-intervention, low-alcohol, available only in a 1L format, affordable, and highly smashable. This cloudy pét-nat ish Vinho Verde, comes from the sub-region of Lousada, and is a mix of Azal, Arinto, Avesso, Trajadura, and Loureiro, and vines 25-30 years. After beginning ferment in stainless, it was bottled with a few grams RS, so it could continue to percolate in the bottle, affording it a gentle spritz.
Lightly hazy straw hue, this streams meadow grass, green and yellow apple, gooseberry across the slight 11% palate, finishing with a grapefruit twist. Fun and fresh, as intended.

NAT’Cool! Tinto Bairrada
Dirk Niepoort's NAT'Cool! range of wines were created to meet certain criteria : be made as naturally as possible, be low alcohol, be terroir-driven, use native grapes to the region, be affordable, and be so smashable that it's only sold in 1L bottles. This lighter, shining red is 40-100 year old baga vines from the limestone laced, clay soils of Bairrada. This was native fermented and aged in stainless, to preserve the purity of fruit.
A lighter crimson hue, this charms with crushed florals, wild strawberry, raspberry, and scrubby herbs, with whisper fine tannins pinning in the sides, and an easy acidity buoying this through the stony finish. Smashable.

Dialogo Tinto

Diálogo Tinto
This youthful red may show a (Canadian themed!) comic on the label, but make no mistake, this is a serious wine, from one of the world's top winemakers, Dirk Niepoort. This is a blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela from the Cima Corgo's schistous soils, and vines up to 40 years in age. This was native fermented in stainless, and aged in a mix of stainless and oak for 6 months.
Fresh and fragrant, with black raspberry, cherry, plum filling a juicy core. Wrapped with slight, sticky tannins, and buoyed by bright acidity, this friendly, smart red is primed for drinking now, all at a welcome 12.5%.
"Always such a satisfying wine, capturing the energy of Douro reds but making it fragrant, open and appealing at the same time. Expect lifted aromas of red plum/raspberry, violet, hot stone/granitic minerality and background oak spice. It is medium weight, juicy yet structured with the same minerality o the finish. Tannins are fairly soft but certainly present. Very well balanced. Tasted February 2026.” - 90 points, David Lawrason, WineAlign.com

Vertente
Vertente means aspect or hillside, well named for the vineyards of the Douro. 50 to 80 year old vines are sourced from all of the vineyards Dirk works with, with a traditional blend of several grape varieties predominantly based on Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Rufete, and Tinta Amarela. After a native ferment in stainless, this was aged in French oak for 22 months.
Fragrant rockrose, scrubby herbs, wild blackberries, and black plum flood a juicy palate, with a fine, schistous, structural brace of tannins that guide this 13% red to a lingering stony finish. Still so much energy in this wine, and time ahead.
“This has a very pure, detailed nose of red fruit and dried flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with restrained fruit flavors and soft and silky yet grainy tannins. Very balanced and harmonious, with a lovely fruit expression. A blend of different varieties. Drink or hold.” - 94 points, Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas, JamesSuckling.com

Redoma Reserva Branco
The Redoma Reserva comes from vineyards which are more than 80 years old, planted in mica-schist soils at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. Since its first edition in 1995, the main objective in producing this wine has been to reflect the character of the Douro’s old vines. The best barriques were selected for the wine’s maturation in order to guarantee minerality, complexity and ageing potential. Rabigato, Códega, Viosinho, Arinto and others were fermented in French barrique, where it remained for 9 months.
There's a lovely reductive thread backboning this wine, drawing green apple, lemon, green fig, and crushed stones along the structured, medium bodied palate, through a lingering flake salt finish. A wine with presence and longevity, drinking beautifully now, and with ample time ahead.
“Lemon curd, dried mangoes, pineapple and some spices on the nose. The palate is full- bodied with a ripe yet balanced profile, but with a spark of acidity that brings it all together. Very long, with a very elegant sense of density and texture. Layered, harmonious, and well-integrated within its style, this is one of Douro’s great whites. Sourced from the cooler right bank of the river, it is a blend crafted from old vines of rabigato, codega de larinho, arinto, viosinho, and other varieties, grown on mica schist soils at elevations between 400 and 600 meters. Drink now or hold.” - 96 points, Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas, JamesSuckling.com, Dec 7, 2024.
‘NIepoort’s Douro Branco Redoma Reserva 2023, meanwhile, can be seen as the little sibling to the Niepoort Douro Branco Coche. This white is produced from a meticulously selected group of vineyards planted at approximately 600 meters in altitude, and it consistently delivers exceptional quality. It's a blend of rabigato, codega de larinho, viosinho, arinto and other grapes from old vines in mica-schist soils at elevations between 400 and 600 meters. According to Niepoort, this is where white varieties excel in the Douro.
The wine undergoes fermentation and is aged for nine months in barrel, where it is subject to further malolactic fermentation. The result is a classy white wine that is dense and textured yet balanced with a refreshing spark of acidity.”

Coche Douro
The Coche is without question Niepoort’s most exclusive white wine, aiming to reach beyond the expression of its vineyards, region, and provenance, and inspired by Bourgogne’s legendary Coche-Dury. The old vines and high altitude are the fundamental factors responsible for the success of this wine. From the exceptionally dry 2022 vintage, harvest of this wine begun on 12 August, with the picking of old vine Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Arinto, and others, from mica-schist soils at 650-700m. After whole cluster pressing and letting for 48 hours, this was native fermented in 228L and 550L French barrels (50% new), with partial MLF, where it remained 1 year on lees for 1 year.
“This has a lovely nose of pears and quince with flinty notes. The palate is sophisticated, well constructed and medium- to full-bodied. It progresses beautifully with electric freshness and concludes with a long and persistent phenolic saline touch. Textural, layered and harmonious. A blend made from mostly old-vine rabigato planted above 600 meters on mica schist soil. Drink or hold.” - 97 points, Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas, JamesSuckling.com

Charme Tinto

Charme Tinto
From 70-100 year old vines rooted in the schist soils of Vale de Mendiz, this blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and others was fermented whole clusters with stems in granite lagares, finishing off in French barriques where it rests for 18 months. Pouring a lighter crimson hue, this medium (13%) Charme charms with rockrose and fragrant wild plum over a schistous underlay, framed with long, fine, delicate tannins, and lofted with an easy buoyant acidity. Such purity and finesse here, with a delicate touch and layers of complexity, drinking beautifully now and with time in your cellar.
"The 2022 Charme offers up floral aromas of roses, hibiscus flowers, cherries and raspberries. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with silky, subtle tannins, red fruit character and a delicate finish. An almost ethereal wine that maintains depth and complexity. This is made from a blend of tinta roriz, touriga franca and others from old vineyards in Vale de Mendiz. Fermented with 100% whole clusters in lagars. Aged for around 18 months in French oak. Already gorgeous but will definitely evolve favorably. Drink or hold." - 97 points, James Suckling, September 11, 2024.

NAT’Cool! Primata
Dirk Niepoort's NAT'Cool! range of wines were created to meet certain criteria : be made as naturally as possible, be low alcohol, be terroir-driven, use native grapes to the region, be affordable, and be so smashable that it's only sold in 1L bottles. Primata is the result of Dirk Niepoort giving his cellar master Luís Pedro a push to make his own wine in 2016. Half the blend is Touriga Nacional grapes, with the rest a mix of old vine Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, all from vineyards at 600m in the Douro Valley's Tabuaço region. Whole bunch and foot-trodden, this was macerated and native fermented in lagares before being pressed into stainless, for a 6 month rest. This lighter red opens with crushed florals, fresh strawberries, peony, and summer rhubarb, with a cranberry tart acidity buoying this fresh 10% red to a cherry blossom finish. Enjoy with a chill and with friends (1L!)

NAT’Cool! Voyeur
Six amphora reds and whites, from vines 40-50 years old, and from six different sites in the Douro go into this unique Voyeur wine. Voyeur is taken from different sites, altitudes, etc. each year. Each site spent 6 months in 1000L Spanish amphora, lined with beeswax, prior to blending in stainless, returning to amphorae for a couple of months, and then bottling. Near deep-rosé in hue, this lighter, juicy red is filled with crunchy red currants, wild flowers, wild herbs along a silken, sleek palate, finishing with ample salinity. So characterful and charming, enjoy this smashable wine now with a light chill.
“Sluiced with translucent cranberry, redcurrant and cherry fruit, this crunchy, sapid, peppery red has fresh, grapefruity acidity and subtle, spicy phenolic tension, having been fermented and macerated in 1,000-litre clay amphorae for approximately six months. True to the Nat Cool philosophy, this minimal intervention, low alcohol, dangerously drinkable yet provocative light Douro red comes by the litre-bottle. Gently chill and enjoy like a vin de soif or rosé.” - 91 points, Sarah Ahmed, Decanter

10 Years Old Tawny Port
This 10 year old Tawny Port is a blend of numerous wines averaging 10 years in age. This comes from vines over 30 years from the schist soils of Vinha da Pisca, Vale do Pinhão, and Ferrão, and blends Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and others. It was foot-trodden and fermented in lagares before ageing in small oak casks. Caramelized orange, bitter citrus marmelade, butterscotch roll along the sweet palate, with spirited citrus and a mint twist on the finish. Dryer than your typical 10 Year Tawny, this is still shining and ready for drinking now.
"The NV 10 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 with a long cork. This is a lovely 10 Year Tawny, elegant in the mid-palate, but complex, precise and focused. There's a bit of a bite on the finish, giving it some length to go with the flavor. The next day it was more about power, with considerable intensity of old-tawny flavor as well, more than I normally see in a 10 Year Old. This is a fine one for the category. It showed best around 56 degrees Fahrenheit. Don't drink it too warm.” 91 points, Mark Squires, Wine Advocate, February 28. 2017.

Dirk Niepoort's NAT'Cool! range of wines were created to meet certain criteria : be made as naturally as possible, be low alcohol, be terroir-driven, use native grapes to the region, be affordable, and be so smashable that it's only sold in 1L bottles. In 2020, the Nat Cool family grew, with this foray into the Dão region, and grapes from the granite slopes of the Serra da Estrela Mountain Range. This is a blend of 40-80 year old vines of Jaen, Tinta Pinheira, Alfrocheiro, Baga, and Touriga Nacional. This was native fermented and aged 6 months in stainless. Pouring a pale hue, this slight red is lifted with wild flowers, wild herbs, perfumed wild cherry and plum, all laced with grippy, granitic texture, and framed with long, light tannins. The finish lingers with light white pepper and crushed stones. Certainly smashable.

Tawny Port
From three schistous soiled vineyards in the Douro and vines upwards of 30 years, this is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz, fermented in lagares with foot treading, and aged in small oak casks for 3.5 years. Mouthfilling and welcoming, with dried raisins, dark butterscotch, caramel kisses and hints of dark cocoa. The sweetness is held in check, thankfully, by a striving acidity. Beauty for drinking now. Dry White Port
This Dry White Port is a blend of Côdega, Rabigato, Viosinho, Arinto and Gouveio from Douro's Covelinhas and Pombal vineyards, and vines upward of 30 years. After fermentation in open lagares, this aged in small old oak casks for 3.5 years before release. It is on the drier side of White Ports, with 51 g/L RS. Caramelized orange, white honey, candied lime and lemon peel, fragrant honeysuckle, dried apricot, and anise roll through this sweet wine, finishing with a wild orange twist. Super smart, thankfully dryish, and calling out for a partnering with tonic.

Diálogo Branco
This youthful white may show a Canadian-themed comic on the label, but make no mistake, this is a serious wine, from one of the world's top winemakers, Dirk Niepoort. From schistous, mica-flecked vineyards on the right bank of the Douro, between 550-700m, this blend of indigenous Portuguese white grapes is native fermented in a split between stainless and older French barriques (30%), with no MLF, and remains there for eight months.
White blossoms, green fig, verbena, and white grapefruit sail across the sleek, river stone palate, with crunchy green apple acidity, a fine layer of lees, and a snappy, saline finish. Fresh and bright, and an easy pick for green veg or shellfish dishes.
