Carrying on his family's winemaking tradition, Fred Loimer studied oenology at Austria’s Klosterneuburg University before gaining valuable work experience in Nahe, Germany, and the Napa Valley. He took over the winery from his father in 1997, purchasing a 19th century vaulted brick cellar, and renovating it into an avant garde architectural black box for his operations. Unlike most of his peers, Fred vinifies his wine to dryness, focusing on full maturity of the grapes, and not on sugar. His fresh modernity and relationship with the land has resulted in pure, focused wines.

The Loimer estate vineyards lie around Langenlois in the cool climate, sunny Kamptal region, northwest of Vienna. Divided into 100 parcels, planted on seven different soil types, and with a range of altitudes, their 80 hectares of vineyard provide fantastic opportunities for complexed and characterful wines. Fred's conversion to biodynamic viticulture began in 2006, and all his estate wines today carry the official Respekt certification, as association of which he is co-president.

Carrying on his family's winemaking tradition, after studying oenology at Austria’s Klosterneuburg University and working in Germany and Napa, Fred Loimer took over the winery from his father in 1997. His 80 hectares of vineyards began conversion to biodynamics in 2006, and all are certified today. Unlike most of his peers, Fred vinifies his wine to dryness, like this concentrated, stony, older vine grüner from vineyard around Langenlois, growing on loess and gneiss soils at 200-400m. Predominantly fermented and aged in large stainless tanks (5% in large oak barrels), this rested 4 months on lees before blending and bottling.

Juicy pink grapefruit, lime zest, honeycrisp apple floods the palate, dusted with white pepper, and finishing with a grapefruit twist. A friendly, smart white and excellent introduction to Kamptal and Loimer. *New label this vintage.

From vineyards in Gumpoldskirchen and Langenlois, this biodynamic Pinot was native fermented over 3 weeks, entirely whole bunch, before resting 1 year in 300L oak casks, plus 6 months in large oak, and then 4 months in stainless tank before bottling, without fining or filtration, and with minimal SO2.

Wild herbs, damp forest, and moss lead this medium bodied red, with a juicy core of raspberry and cherry wrapped with finely sticky tannins, hugging the sides to a stony, saline, medicinal cherry finish. A lovely pure look at cool climate Pinot.

From certified biodynamic vineyards in Village sites Langenlois and Gumpoldskirchen, and loess, gneiss, and limestone gravels, this blends 33% Zweigelt, 19% Pinot Noir, 17% Pinot Blanc, 16% Chardonnay, 13% Pinot Gris, and 2% St. Laurent, native fermented in stainless, with full MLF. This spent at least 22 months on lees before disgorgement June 2023 with 2 g/L. Crunchy green apple, pear blossom, apricot skin races through this dry, zippy sparkler, with a tart citrus twist on the snappy finish. A lovely fresh aperitif wine.

"The white-golden colored NV Extra Brut Reserve, disgorged after 36 months with a dosage of two grams per liter in July 2021, offers a clear, deep, fresh and intense, well-concentrated, quite complex and mineral-defined bouquet of white, ripe fruits, cherries and chocolate intertwined with brioche aromas and flinty tones. On the palate, this is a rich and mouth-filling, very generous but precise and structured blend of colored grapes. The wine is full-bodied, intense and complex, and with this well-dosed richness, no gram of dosage will be missed. The finish reveals refreshing lemon aromas and otherwise rather red-wine notes such as cherries and black berries. In any case, this Extra Brut is utterly fresh and exciting. 12% stated alcohol. From vineyards in the village of Langenlois, this Grüner Veltliner is from vines 20-50 years, and a mix of loess, sandy clays, and gneiss on mostly terraced vineyards. This was whole cluster pressed with partial maceration before a native ferment in primarily stainless, with 30% seeing time in used large oak barrels. Post ferment, this rested in stainless on fine lees for 5 months. Tight lemongrass, lemon verbena rule this streamlined white, with a light white honey sheen over river stones. This trails long with crystalline lemon and light salinity. Great energy here.

"Striking nose of caramelized pineapple, with white and pink pepper. Quite some tension on the medium-bodied palate between the fine tannins and the restrained fruit. Long, emphatically dry finish with dried herb complexity. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold. From loess, and limestone gravels in Kamptal’s Langenlois and Gumpoldskirchen, and vines up to 20 years old, this biodynamic pet nat is a blend of 50% Donauriesling, 29% Muskateller, 13% Grüner Veltliner, and 8% Chardonnay. This was whole cluster native fermented in barrels and stainless before heading to bottle during ferment, where it spent 6 months on lees. This was disgorged in April 2023. Just off-dry, cloudy by intent, and 11.5%, this streams fragrant apricot, bergamot, pink grapefruit, and lime pith along the tight, nimble palate, finishing with a riffing grip. Lovely energy and lift here, in this pure pet nat.

This NV biodynamic orange wine blends Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, Riesling, Chardonnay, Traminer, and Muskateller from sedimentary, limestone gravels, and vines up to 85 years old in the Gumpoldskirchen. This was partial whole cluster native fermented in barrels (some lots on skins) for 8-10 months on full lees. This dry wine was bottled in spring 2022 without fining or filtration, evident in the slight haze to the medium yellow hue.

Apricot, peach fuzz, potpourri musk, and potent lime pith run the lightly grippy palate to a tart, light ashen finish. Fun pairing wine.

"This pours brassy orange, with some haziness. It has a ripe nose of apricot/pumpkin with tea, ginger and caraway spices. It is medium weight, nicely fresh and soft with a hint of sweetness. Good flavour intensity, just a touch sweet, with a drying, slightly tannic finish. The length is excellent. Tasted October 2024.” - 91 points, David Lawrason, WineAlign.com

"Gluegglich Glückliches (meaning happy or lucky) is a mouthful of many things, not the least of which are of thoughts, ideas, plans and connections. A skin-macerated white made with an endless landscape of varieties named as grüner veltliner, riesling, chardonnay, zierfandler, weißburgunder, sauvignon blanc, rotgipfler, traminer, weißburgunder, muskateller and also gemischter satz - which means who knows how many more. Also non-vintage which makes for matching grape to vintage impossible. But the vintages represented are 2022 (45 percent), 2021 (35) 2020 (9), 2019 (4) and 2018 (7). Not sure if this is serious or just fun so will go with the latter because cleanliness is next to Gluegglich-ness and easy drinking is the order of the delicious day. Meanwhile the villages of Gumpoldskirchen & Langenlois are the source and “down-to-earth cooking” is Loimer’s suggested pairing. Drink 2024-2026. "Loimer describes this as a wine "made just like in the old days", from a blend of Austrian varieties (18% Grüner Veltliner, 21% Riesling, 6% Chardonnay, 16% Zierfandler, 3% Weißburgunder, 13% Sauvignon Blanc, 11% Rotgipfler, 7% Traminer, 4% Weißburgunder, 1% Gemischterer Satz, 1% Muskateller) from multiple vintages (2022 (45%), 2021 (35%) 2020 (9%), 2019 (4%), 2018 (7%), if you must know), wild fermented partly on skins and aged in old wood. It pours cloudy orange-gold but smells much fresher than anticipated, with abundant of yellow-fleshed orchard fruit and orange blossoms, sweet green herbs, verbena, citrus zest and more in a tonic and inviting expresion with fine complexity. The palate shows energy and life with a little CO2 lift and plenty of sapidity - it really makes you salivate and come back for anothe sip, living up to its cuvée name which means "happy" or "lucky". I found it frank and honest, genuinely delicious, and especially remarkably clean and fresh, a rarity in the orange wine category. I guess they were happy in the old days. Drink now.
