Weingut F. X. Pichler
Wachau, Austria
Founded in Oberloiben in 1898, the Pichler estate has developed a reputation as a Grüner Veltliner specialist since Franz Pichler Sr began selecting his own clones in 1928. The estate was once fulsomely described by Robert Parker as the “Château Latour, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Zind-Humbrecht, Sandrone and Helen Turley of the Wachau”.
Franz Xaver (FX) took over at the estate in 1971 and his meticulous approach earned him plaudits on both the domestic and international stage. Franz Xaver’s son Lucas joined the winery team in 1996, taking over winemaking at the estate in 1999 and assuming management of the whole estate in 2009. Lucas manages the winery together with his wife Johanna, representing the 5th generation to farm these lands. Today, FX Pichler owns 20 hectares of vineyards, almost half of which are planted on steep terraces and worked entirely by hand. The aim is always to create wines that are a true reflection of the year, the soil and the special microclimate of the Wachau. The fine nuances of each respective site should be perceptible and tangible in their multi-layered uniqueness. The winery left the Vinea Wachau as of the 2020 vintage, thus dropping the use of the Federspiel and Smaragd term. Though they have always been farming organically, they started the process to certification in 2021.

Grüner Veltliner Ried Klostersatz
Founded in Oberloiben in 1898, the Pichler estate has developed a reputation as a Grüner Veltliner specialist since Franz Pichler Sr began selecting his own clones in 1928. His grandson son Lucas joined the winery team in 1996, taking over winemaking at the estate in 1999 and assuming management of the whole estate in 2009. Lucas manages the winery together with his wife Johanna, representing the 5th generation to farm these lands. The Ried Klostersatz is one of the oldest vineyards in the Wachau to be cultivated by the monks of Bavarian and Salzburg monasteries. It is situated in the Loibner basin, within the curve of the Danube river between Dürnstein and Oberloiben. The fine sandy topsoil is overlying gravels that have washed down from the Alps. Bone dry and tight with apple skin, lees, and stones, the brisk acidity of this organic GV is countered with subtle meadow grasses, all held by ample tension throughout the lengthy finish. Uncompromising and pure rock juice.
"Here’s a wonderfully racy, medium-bodied gruner veltliner with Reine Claude plum fruit and wild herb aromas that make this very expressive. Long, very clean finish. From a gravelly soil on the plain between the terraced hillside sites and the bank of the Danube. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - 93 points, Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com, Sept 6, 2024.

Grüner Veltliner Loibner
Founded in Oberloiben in 1898, the Pichler estate has developed a reputation as a Grüner Veltliner specialist since Franz Pichler Sr began selecting his own clones in 1928. His grandson son Lucas joined the winery team in 1996, taking over winemaking at the estate in 1999 and assuming management of the whole estate in 2009. Lucas manages the winery together with his wife Johanna, representing the 5th generation to farm these lands. The name LOIBEN (for the area of the cadastral communities Oberloiben and Unterloiben) is the designation of origin of this Wachau DAC village wine. The organic vineyards are situated on the plains of the Loibner basin, with light and warm soils made of alluvial Danube sand and gravel.
Perfumed pear, Asian pear, gooseberry run the sleek palate, with lingering stones on the lemony, saline finish. Super smart, with great energy.
"Very fresh and vibrant, but with good substance on the medium-bodied palate, this is a prototypical Danube gruner veltliner. Lovely yellow apple and lime freshness in the very clean finish. From parcels with sandy soil close to the bank of the river. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink now. Screw cap.” - 91 points, Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com, Sept 6, 2024.

Grüner Veltliner Durnsteiner
This wine comes predominantly from younger organically farmed terraced mountain vineyard plots around the village of Dürnstein. This sleek GV streams meadow grass, green apple, crushed stone across a textural frame, with ample buzzy energy through a saline finish. Very smart, drinking beautifully now.
"The impressive interplay of restrained richness and very animating mineral acidity is what gives this excellent gruner veltliner its pronounced personality. Long, wild herb finish that’s simultaneously compact and refreshing. A cuvee of about half vineyards on the plain and half young vines on the steep, terraced vineyards of the region. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold. Screw cap.” - 94 points, Stuart Pigott, Senior Editor, JamesSuckling.com

Riesling Reid Loibenberg
The Loibenberg is one of the steepest and most barren terraced vineyards in Loiben. This site is also one of the largest continuous individual vineyard sites in the Wachau, almost entirely south-facing, geologically dominated by Gföhler gneiss.
“FX Pichler's 2021 Loibner Riesling Ried Loibenberg is deep, highly complex and coolish on the nose, offering just-ripe mango and apricot aromas with ripe pumpkin seeds as well as notes of crystalline rocks. On the palate, this is a dense, crystalline and precise, tight and intense, even powerful yet not mighty or alcoholic Riesling with insanely concentrated but just-ripe and tight fruit with healthy phenolic grip and great tension. This is another stellar wine of the vintage in the Wachau and, mind you, from one of the warmest crus around. It's a great wine that Riesling lovers shouldn't miss. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022. Drink 2022-2060.” - 96 points, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, December 8, 2022.

Grüner Veltliner Reid Steinertal
This unique site is situated at the most eastern end of the Wachau, between the Loibenberg and the Pfaffenberg. The old vineyard name is “Steingraben”, as its form depicts a rift, which broadens into an amphitheatre as it reaches down towards the vineyard landscape in Unterloiben. The site is clearly characterized by its proximity to the nearby forest, from which nocturnal northerly breezes cool the vineyard as they pass through on their current towards the Danube. This makes Steinertal the cool, slow ripening single-vineyard site within the Loibner vineyards, which is unique in its ideal harvest picking time and mineral character. The geological subsoil of the Ried Steinertal consists entirely of lime-free, acidic molten Gföhler gneiss (orthogneiss).
“From the coolest vineyard of the crus here and based on destemmed and macerated fruits, Pichler's 2021 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Ried Steinertal was vinified in stainless steel, aged in large oak until July and bottled in August and offers a clear, refined and elegant, indeed coolish bouquet of bright fruits. Full-bodied and intense on the palate, this is a gentle, very fine and elegant Steinertal with a dense core and an almost velvety texture. The acidity is fine and perfectly interwoven and the tannins are remarkably delicate. The finish is long and intense and shows stimulating bitters, but against all trends, there is not phenolic grip, which is what we often find in the Danube Veltliners of the 2021 vintage, but fine and healthy grip. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022. Drink 2022-2040.” - 94 points, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, December 8, 2022.

“The 2021 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Ried Loibenberg offers a fascinating, clear and pure, deep, intense and mineral-rich bouquet with just-ripe fruit but also grassy and herbal aromas with a hint of smoke, dates and tobacco leaves. Full-bodied yet vital and fresh on the palate, this is a rich and intense but also pure, refined and very elegant Loibenberg with a dense body uplifted by fine mineral acidity. It's an impressive, stimulating, saline and refreshing mineral and herbal GV with a sustainable and complex finish. Absolutely gorgeous Loibenberg. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022. Drink 2023-2050.” - 96 points, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, December 8, 2022.

Riesling Ried Burgstall
The Burgstall vineyard refers to a crag bedrock plateau towering 30 metres above, bordering Unterloiben to the east. This sun drenched, wind swept vineyard is situated at the westernmost end of this rock terrace, and the soils consist of pure gneiss and granite, with a shallow topsoil of sand. Bone dry and energetic, with crunchy green apple, Asian pear, lemon pith, verbena strung across a buzzy granitic baseline. Whiffs of elderflower and struck stone scent the juicy, vibrant palate, finishing with lingering lime pith and saline notes. Lovely energy here in this pure riesling, drinking smartly now, and with time ahead.
“The deep yet delicately peachy fruit of this ravishingly beautiful Wachau dry riesling is very hard to resist. Also notes of pink grapefruit and Amalfi lemons. Excellent concentration, but this is also fine and cool. Very long, limey finish that’s so precise and subtle. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold.” - 96 points, Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com, Sept 6, 2024.
