Grüner Veltliner Loibner

Founded in Oberloiben in 1898, the Pichler estate has developed a reputation as a Grüner Veltliner specialist since Franz Pichler Sr began selecting his own clones in 1928. His grandson son Lucas joined the winery team in 1996, taking over winemaking at the estate in 1999 and assuming management of the whole estate in 2009. Lucas manages the winery together with his wife Johanna, representing the 5th generation to farm these lands. The name LOIBEN (for the area of the cadastral communities Oberloiben and Unterloiben) is the designation of origin of this Wachau DAC village wine. The organic vineyards are situated on the plains of the Loibner basin, with light and warm soils made of alluvial Danube sand and gravel.

Perfumed pear, Asian pear, gooseberry run the sleek palate, with lingering stones on the lemony, saline finish. Super smart, with great energy.

"Very fresh and vibrant, but with good substance on the medium-bodied palate, this is a prototypical Danube gruner veltliner. Lovely yellow apple and lime freshness in the very clean finish. From parcels with sandy soil close to the bank of the river. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink now. Screw cap.” - 91 points, Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com, Sept 6, 2024.
