MIXED CASE : FULLER REDS 21

Each case contains two bottles of the following wines:

DogRidge THE PUP Shiraz 2019, McLaren Vale, Australia. $26
DogRidge’s sustainably farmed vineyards are home to some of the oldest vines in McLaren Vale, with 60+ year old Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon growing on their McLaren Flat site. THE PUP is a cheeky, robust Shiraz, with candied plum, ripe cherry, light smoke, and fine, rugged tannins. Soft, ripely sweet, and ready to crack now, with meat on the barbie.

Heinrich Naked Red 2018, Burgenland, Austria. $25
Naked and unadorned, this is a natural red blend that hides nothing. Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent come from both sides of the Neusiedler See (Lake Neusiedl). On the west side, vines are rooted in the limestone and schist of the Leithaberg (Leitha Mountains) slopes; on the east side of the lake grapes in the gravelly Parndorfer Platte (Parndorfer Plain) and humus-rich Heideboden. The vineyards are in conversion to organics. This light, juicy red was native fermented with two weeks maceration in wooden fermentation vat and steel tank, and then aged for over a year in wood cask. Spiced blackcurrant, wild black cherry, pencil shavings rule the slender palate, sharpened with a balsamic twist. Tannins are slight and sticky, and acidity is crunchy bright. True to name / style.

Carter Mollenhauer Los Despachos Petit Verdot 2020, DO Maule, Chile. $36
Husband and wife team Edgard Carter and Karine Mollenhauer run their family winery in the Maule, making a few small-production wines from indigenous grapes. Their idea is to elevate the reputation of purity and authenticity of Chilean wine through organic farming, and minimal intervention in the cellar. A rarity in Maule, this Petit Verdot was planted in 2007 in alluvial gravel and quartz of Los Despachos, cooled by the Pacific Ocean which is 33 km away. It was native fermented and vinified partially whole cluster in stainless, prior to aging 19 months in older 225L French barrels and 13% in new 500L French demi-muids. Heady and concentrated, but with intense ample acidity, this carries wild black cherry, black raspberry, bracketed by straight and upright tannins, and seasoned with salted violet, purple florals, potent graphite minerality, and wild mint through the saline finish. Not the easiest grape to handle solo, and they've nailed it here. 2848 bottles.

Silvio Carta Serenata 2021, DOC Cannonau di Sardegna, Sardinia, Italy. $32
Silvio Carta founded his eponymous company in Baratili San Pietro in the 1950’s, devoting himself to making traditional wines and spirits of the region. Sixty years on, Silvio, together with his son Elio, the latter at the head since 1973, still devote themselves to these aims. This cannonau (garnacha) comes from 12 year old vines, near the sea, rooted in calcareous soils. It was native fermented in stainless, where it remained for 8-10 months' rest. Perfumed purple and blue fruits are imbued with ample scrubby resinous herbs, scented with wild florals, and lined with worked leather. Tannins are sinewy but will absorbed into the fuller wine, guiding to a spiced finish. Tastes of the Mediterranean.

Vinyes Domènech Bancal del Bosc Tinto 2021, DO Monsant, Spain. $27
Vinyes Domènech is a family project started Joan Ignaci and his wife, Rita, in Capçanes, in the south of Priorat. Together with their sons, they biodynamically farm 15 hectares of recovered old-vines vineyards. This is 85/15 Garnacha / Samsó (AKA Carignan) from red clay and calcareous soils. After a native ferment, this aged in both French oak and stainless for 6 months. Wild and stony, this fuller red is infused with scrubby herbs and wildflowers, and wrapped with fine, sticky tannins, laced with pink peppercorn. There's a beauty mountain freshness here, easily lofting garnacha's 14.5 degrees. A lovely pairing for pork / wild mushrooms.

The Atom God Particle Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, California, USA. $25
From vineyards sourced from California’s North Coast, this is a deeply ripe, smouldering Cabernet Sauvignon, rich with tobacco leaf, cassis, and liquorice. Tannins are plump and wood-built, shouldering the sun-ripened weight of this Cali Cab. Drinking very well now.
