MIXED CASE : PINOT NOIR

Each case contains a bottle of the following wines:

La Soeur Cadette Bourgogne Rouge 2021, Bourgogne, France. $59
Valentin Montanet is based in western Bourgogne’s Vézelay, where he is caretaker of his parents’ 22ha of organically farmed vineyards. In 2016, Valentin began a négociant business, creating the La Soeur Cadette range. This Bourgogne Rouge comes from 60 year old vines on the Côte d'Or, in clay and limestone soils. It was aged for 8 months in 225L barrels. Fragrant cherry, perfumed raspberry, is studded with mustard seed and lined with candle wax through a subtly medicinal spiced finish. Tannins are finely sticky, and acidity is easily lofted, making this prime for drinking now.

Domaine Chevalier et Filles Côtes de Nuits Villages 2020, Bourgogne, France. $68
From 50+ year old vines rooted in clay and chalky soils of the village of Corgoloin, in Côtes de Nuits, this Pinot Noir spent one year in wood prior to bottling. Dusky black cherry, black raspberry is scented with forest floor, and framed with firm, finely grippy, black tea tannins, guiding this to a lingering spiced finish. Very good typicity here, and ready to drink now.

Churton Pinot Noir Natural State 2022, Marlborough, New Zealand. $43
Natural State is the Churton family second generation, Jack and Ben Weaver's, personal project. It comes from organically / biodynamically farmed pinot noir from the hillside Clod Block of their Waihopai Valley estate vineyard, planted in 2000, their youngest Pinot Noir block. This was destemmed, native fermented with 14 days on skins (half a lunar month) and tipped into French barrels for 3 months. Forest moss, sapid plum, branch, tart cherry and white pepper spices flood the lean palate, with finely grippy tannins and early pick green edged acidity. A youthful, fresh and authentic Pinot.

Oceano Pinot Noir Spanish Springs Vineyard 2021, San Luis Obispo, California, USA. $87
Oceano Wines is a boutique winery founded in 2016 in San Luis Obispo Coast, the newly designated AVA highlighting this cool climate wine region. This comes off the Spanish Springs Vineyard, the westernmost vineyard in the US, 1.5 miles from the Pacific, on a mix of marine shale, limestone, sandstone. This Pinot Noir is a mix of Swan, 828, 667, and 777, fermented in tank and then moved to 228L French barrels for 8 months' aging.  

Alexana Pinot Noir Revana Vineyard 2019, Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA. $99
From the 55 acre home Revana Vineyard in Dundee Hills, this encompasses 10 clones of pinot, growing across a 300 foot elevation change. Each lot was native fermented whole berry,  and barrel aged 11 months (27% new) before the final blend. Crunchy plum, perfumed raspberry, and morello cherry rule the medium-bodied, herbal edged palate, with bright acidity and fine, long and sticky tannins to frame. The end lingers with a bitter cherry twist.

Minimus Pinot Noir Dijon Free 2017, Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA. $55
No Dijon clones were harmed in the making of this wine. Though Dijon clones are prevalent throughout the Willamette, they wanted to create a wine using only heirloom clones. This was a blend of Mount Eden, Swan, Mariafeld, with 30% whole cluster, aged in neutral French oak. Fragrant black cherry, wild raspberry, black tea flood the juicy palate, with finely sticky, long tannins housing the pure fruit. The finish lingers with dried florals and salinity. Quite lovely and multilayered, and a wonderfully different lens with which to view Willamette Pinot.
