MIXED CASE : Hajszan Neumann 3

Each six pack contains the following wines:

Pét-Nat 2021. $38
Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Gruner, Neuburger, Welshrielshing, Traminer from 3 vineyards were harvested earlier than normal, and naturally fermented in Amphora, prior to heading into bottle. They use 5% gelber muskateller for topping up here. Pear skin, yellow apple, hops run a crisp, slight palate, with finely buzzy bubbles. Disgorged March 2022.

Grüner Veltliner Nussberg 2020. $29
This cuvée comes from the cooler Weisleiten and Haarlocke vineyards of Nussberg. After a short maceration on skins, this was native fermented in stainless, where it remained until the following spring. Bright and fresh, though now with a slight honeyed slick, this streams verbena, pear skin, crab apple, river stones along a streamlined palate, seasoned with subtle white pepper and pithy wild lime. Under stelvin, this will continue to go the distance, becoming even more interesting as it ages.

Gemischter Satz Nussberg 2021. $29
Gemischter Satz is a traditional field blend from allowable Austrian quality grapes, with a minimum of three grapes. From various limestone-soiled Nussberg sites, this cofermented fields blend of Pinot Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Neuburger, Riesling, and Welschriesling was native fermented and aged in stainless.

Grüner Veltliner NATURAL 2021. $25
Natural is Fritz Wieninger's experimental range of wines. This went to bottle without fining, filtration or sulphur. This Grüner Veltliner comes from an old vineyard in Ried Gabrissen on Vienna's Bisamberg, a sunny south-facing location on loess, with high lime content and a prominent gravel band in the higher part of the vineyard. This orange wine spent 4 months on skins in stainless, through native fermentation. White blossoms, pear skin, quince skin rule the tight nervy, grippy palate, through the lengthy saline finish. Bright and vibrant.

Gemischter Satz NATURAL 2020. $54
The grapes for this natural Gemischter Satz come from two old vineyards on the Wiener Nussberg: Ried Weissleiten, and Ried Ulm. The soil of both is comprised of limestone and clay, with a very high chalk component throughout. This is a blend of Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, and Traminer, native fermented on skins in concrete eggs with no sulphur or other additions. Post-ferment, it remains in the eggs for more than 5 months, after which it is racked off into neutral 500L barrels where it rested for 6 weeks before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Concentrated and heady, with dried apricot, dried peach, dried blossoms, quince, lychee, lime pith and orange oil, coated with a medicinal white cherry. There's an ample fine grip and a heap of tension to keep this textural, natural, biodynamic orange wine alive to the finish. So much going on in this complexed wine, and it all works.

Traminer NATURAL 2019. $66
The grapes for the Natural Traminer come from the single vineyard Obere Schos, located on the Vienna Nussberg, and its limestone, chalk, and clay soils. The Red and Yellow Traminer blend was native fermented on skins in concrete eggs, staying there for five months, after which it was carefully racked to older 500L barrels where it remained for 6 weeks. This went to bottle without fining, filtration or sulphur. Natural is Fritz Wieninger's experimental range of wines.

With a name like Fritz Wieninger, you have to trust that wine is wine is in his blood. Fritz is a pioneer of the New Vienna wine movement, combining modernity and progress with the traditions of the region and of his family, who have been making wine for over 100 years. Fritz is the winemaker for two Viennese wineries: Wieninger, and Hajszan Neumann. Hajszan Neumann is Fritz’ natural project, where he has greater flexibility to experiment with low-to-no intervention winemaking techniques. Both wineries are certified biodynamic; Fritz is the co-president of RESPEKT with Fred Loimer, as well as a founding member and chairman of the Wien Wein growers association. The vineyards and wineries are in the heart of Vienna, Wien as the locals call it, and the only city in the world where vineyards flourish inside city limits. Steeped in history, the Nussberg vineyard sites house some of the oldest vines in Austria.
