MIXED CASE : WEINGUT HEINRICH

Each case contains the following wines:

Oh When the Saints Pet Nat 2021. $46
This St. Laurent was grown on mica schist, started native ferment in inox. Native ferment. Light apricot, green apple, bright pear skin, apricot fuzz and elderflower blossoms carries a lovely completeness thanks to a kiss of sweetness. Charming. 10.9%, this was Disgorged spring 2022.

Chardonnay Leithaberg DAC 2021. $43
From limestone. After overnight skin contact, the must goes into tank very brown. It was fermented in tank, then into oval casks for 7 months on lees. Green apple, apple skin, tight elderflower hums along the palate, lit with vibrant, buzzy energy, and strung with amazing tension. Lingering saline finish. 9000 bottles.

Naked White 2021. $29
Naked and unadorned, this is a natural biodynamic white blend that hides nothing. Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Grüner Veltliner, and Welschriesling are sourced from vineyards on both sides of Burgenland’s Lake Neusidel, rooted into limestone, schist, gravel soils. After a native ferment in stainless, this rested 14 months on lees in large, older oak before being bottled unfiltered with minimal sulphur. Pouring a hazy hue, this buzzes along the palate with wild citrus, white florals, and crushed stones, lit with energy and lingering with salinity. A beauty slight white ready for enjoying now, liberally.

Graue Freyheit 2020. $67
Freyheit means freedom, and signifies Heinrich's natural range of wines. Ceramic bottle. This is a blend of 50% Pinot Blanc, with the remainder Pinot Gris and Chardonnay (with the PB and Chard cofermented). Pours a hazy peach blush hue, thanks to 2 weeks on skins on amphora. Beautifully textural, with sour / crab apple, apricot skin, apricot blossom, meadow grass, elderflower, bergamot. Lovely salinity and energy on the finish.

Blaufränkisch 2018. $31
With organic / biodynamic grapes sourced from the east and west side of the Neusiedler See (Lake Neusiedl), this blends grapes growing in the limestone and schist of the Leithaberg (Leitha Mountains), as well as the sandy loams on the Parndorfer Platte (Parndorfer Plain). This was native fermented with two weeks maceration on the skins in wooden vats and steel tank before 39 months aging in wooden vats and in used 500-litre oak barrels.

Blaufränkisch Leithaberg DAC 2017. $49
From a mix of Leithaberg’s limestone, sandstone, mica schist soils, this spent 20 months in older 500L barrels. Wild plum, wild blackberry are layered throughout the tight, grippy, schistous frame. Finessed and understated, through the saline finish.

There is more than a little irony that Gernot and Heike Heinrich met in a beer garden. That was more than 30 years ago, in Salzburg, Austria. Heike was from Germany, working in fashion and PR. Gernot had vineyards waiting for him back home, in Austria’s red wine haven of Burgenland. In 1989, when Gernot returned to his parents’ estate in the village of Gols, they had scarcely a hectare, so the duo started their own estate parallel to the family’s. Since then, the growth of Weingut Heinrich has been as swift as it has been considered. At the time Gernot and Heike were married, in 1993, they were up to 2 hectares. Today, it’s 100+ hectares, entirely farmed biodynamically or in conversion to biodynamics, certified by both Demeter and Respekt Biodyn. The wines are made, in Gernot’s words, by “allowing them and ourselves the freedom of increasingly less intervention,” and above all with an acute sense of rhythm, place, and time.
