Mixed Case Tuscan Reds
MIXED CASE : TUSCAN REDS 14
Each case contains two bottles of the following wines:
Lanciola Chianti Colli Fiorentini 2021. $20
In Greve, in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, the winery has 14 hectares, 10 of which are devoted to vineyards sitting on shale soils at approximately 300 meters. This organically farmed Sangiovese is splashed with 10% of other local grapes, and fermented in stainless before resting in concrete. Dried and fresh cherry, perfumed raspberry is scented with dried florals, and framed with finely grippy tannins through the bitter edged finish. Nice freshness throughout.
Selvapiana Chianti Rufina 2022. $31
Rufina is the smallest appellation in Chianti, extending across 750 hectares. This is 95% Sangiovese, joined with tips of Canaiolo, Colorino, and Malvasia Nera from well-drained, dry and stony north and north-west facing vineyards. These 15-40 year old vines grow in medium density clay and limestone at 200-300m. Fermentation and maceration occurs in stainless over 25 days with native yeast, before aging 75% in cement, 10% in foudre, and 15% in stainless. Bright and lifted cherry, ripe raspberry is kissed with wild orange, and dosed liberally with flake salts. Tannins are fine and sticky, hugging this medium red to a gently spiced finish. A subtle and pretty Rufina, ready to enjoy now with fragrant mushroom dishes.
Fanti Rosso di Montalcino 2022. $34
Made from 15-20-year-old vines, the wine was fermented for 20-25 days in stainless before ageing for one year in oak barrels, 300L French oak barriques, and 3,000L oak barrels. The wine then aged in a bottle for 7 months before release. Perfumed raspberry, worn wood, cherry fills the slight frame, edged with grippy tannins, and finishing with a drying rasp of spices. Best enjoyed with grilled lamb or sausage.
Podere 414 Morellino di Scanscano 2022. $35
Owned by Simone Castelli, Podere 414 is a certified organic estate with 13 hectares of vines, situated in western Tuscany, straddling a river near Scansano. From the region's very stony soils, this morellino (sangiovese) is splashed with colorino, ciliegiolo, alicante, and syrah. Each variety is vinified separately before the blend goes into two year old barriques for one year, followed by additional bottle age before release. Sultry wild cherry and dark florals are imbued with balsam and scrubby herbs, wrapped by finely sticky tannins that draw this through the stony, lingering finish. Bright acidity makes this imminently drinkable, through it is certainly worth cellaring for the next couple of years.
Fanti Poggio Torto 2022. $26
The Tenuta Fanti estate has belonged to the Fanti family since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It extends across 300 hectares in Toscana, 52ha of which are specialized certified sustainable vineyards. The name Poggio Torto (leaning hill) comes from the irregular shape of the hill Poggio d’Arna, that is in front of the winery. This blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah comes from young vines rooted in schist and clay. It was fermented in stainless before 4 months in oak barrels, 50% in barriques of 3hl, and 50% in big oak barrels of 50 hL. Ripe blackberry, cherry, boysenberry floods the generous palate, framed with ample soft and sticky tannins which take this to an herbal finish. Best enjoyed with grilled pork / veg.
Le Ragnaie Troncone 2022. $32
Montalcino has an altitude limit in Brunello; it's not allowed to grow above 600m. This organically farmed Sangiovese is grown from 620-655m altitude, hence it fell into the declassification of IGT Chianti Colli Senesi. In 2014, the wine was too pale and wasn't even approved for that, so Riccardo Campinoti said BASTA and labelled the wines IGT Toscana Rosso. Troncone means stump, and was the nickname of Riccardo's grandfather. There is also a large stump in the sandstone, limestone and clay vineyard, giving this wine's name a double meaning. Ragnaie is the name of the vineyard, Etruscan for spiderweb, and reflecting the label and the netting that Etruscans would use to catch small birds. This 14 year old organically farmed sangiovese was native fermented and on skins for 2 weeks in concrete, before one year in older Slavonian oak casks. Alluring from first whiff, with salted cherry, fragrant raspberry, worked leather and dried scrubby herbs stretching across a lifted palate, framed with firm, fine tannins, and buoyed by effortless lofty acidity, finishing with a flush of peppery spice. There's such a lovely ease and grace to this medium bodied youthful wine. Enjoy liberally.
