Titolo by AMPHORA
Elena Fucci grew up in the middle of the vineyards that her grandfather Generoso began farming in the 1960’s, selling the fruit to the local cooperative. Rather than sell off the family properties in 2000, Elena Fucci took on the challenge of stewarding the oldest vineyards on Monte Vulture, forever changing the future of the Aglianico del Vulture DOC. The vineyards are rooted at 600m, on the steep slopes of the dormant volcanic cliffs. These 50-70 year old Aglianico vines were destemmed and primarily whole berry, native fermented in an untreated terracotta amphora form the Impurenta (Florence). It remained on skins for 2 weeks of fermentation before being racked off, pressed, and back to terracotta for aging 18 months, followed by 6 months in bottle.
“The 2019 Titolo by Amphora blossoms slowly in the glass, with musky blackberry, sage, kalamata olive, ash and hints of smoke that create a classic Aglianico del Vulture profile. This is savory at the core yet spry, with citrus-ginger black fruits and brisk acids that maintain a cool-toned and mineral style. Grippy tannins take control through the dramatically long finale, clenching down on the tart berry and flora tones that reside; yet through it all, the 2019 keeps the palate watering for more. There’s a more immediate feel brought upon the Amphora aging; yet to get the maximum effect, I recommend opening a number of hours prior to serving the 2019. Drink 2024-2032.” - 93 points, Eric Guido, Vinous, June 2021.
