Elena Fucci grew up in the middle of the vineyards that her grandfather Generoso began farming in the 1960’s, selling the fruit to the local cooperative. Rather than sell off the family properties in 2000, Elena Fucci took on the challenge of stewarding the oldest vineyards on Monte Vulture, forever changing the future of the Aglianico del Vulture DOC. The vineyards are rooted at 600m, on the steep slopes of the dormant volcanic cliffs. This Aglianico Superiore comes from a 70 year old parcel and was native fermented in stainless before finishing MLF in 200L French barrels (50% new) where it remained for 2 years. It rested in bottle 1 more year before release.
“The 2018 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo Superiore pulls me deep into the glass to take in the beguiling bouquet, as balsamic spice, incense and crushed ashen rocks evolve into a mix of blackberries, sage and hints of animal musk. Cool-toned and finessed, this impresses with its savory, nearly salty character and perfumed black fruit profile, as brisk acids maintain a lovely freshness. A twang of sour citrus adds a bump of nervous energy toward the close, as the 2018 finishes with a web of silty tannins and hints of black currant that linger on. The Superior is a selection that’s refined for 12 months in tonneaux, followed by 12 months in used barrels and, finally 12 months in bottle. It’s aromatically stunning, with added textural depth and an enhanced structure that outweighs the 2018 Titolo.
