Batuta Tinto

Niepoort Vinhos
Batuta

Batuta is an impressive very old vine red, with fruit from Quinta do Carril, a north-facing vineyard more than 70 years old, and also from 100 years old vineyards near Quinta de Nápoles. This blend of tinta amarela, rufete, touriga franca, tinta roriz, malvazia preta and others fermented in stainless steel, with 80 days maceration and no extraction before heading to French barrel, 50% new, for 20 months.

Finessed and structured, with lithe, bamboo-firm tannins and precise, fresh acidity driving the length of the wine. Dusky dark plum, black cherry, savoury stoniness textures throughout. Such refinement and detailing, even in this tight, young stage, this will express even more over the next decade and beyond. All this within 13% alcohol. Respect.

"I had already encountered a bottle or two of the 2023 Batuta before I tasted it in the Niepoort cellars in Serpa Pinto in Gaia, and the wine had already caused a big impression on me. It comes from the same two vineyards in Covas do Douro and had four months of maceration/infusion with the skins—but without stems—in concrete and then spent 18 months in oak. It has to be among the finest vintages of Batuta ever (and they think 2024 could be even better, but I didn't taste it). It's dark, ripe and juicy but not overripe or excessive, showy and hedonistic but also serious and elegant. It has a very fine thread and polished and elegant tannins. It has 13.1% alcohol, a pH of 3.57 and 5.2 grams of acidity. 8,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2025. Drink 2026-2036.” 96 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

"This comes from Covas do Douro from two vineyards, one east facing and the other one west facing. This ferments with destemmed whole berries for four months. This has a dark fruit profile, with violets, dark bramble fruit, but also a mineral texture. With a more firmer palate but very elegant and complete. Cohesive.”‍ ‍96 points, Jacobo García Andrade, JamesSuckling.com
