Barbera d'Alba Zio Nando
Youthful, energetic, travelled Enrico Rivetto farms his family's estate with a philosophy beyond biodynamics (they are the first Demeter certified winery in Barolo), and towards complete biodiversity. Zio translates to uncle in Italian, and the vineyard that forms an important part of this wine was planted by Uncle Nando in 1944. This youthful red uses one third of 1944 vines from a vineyard planted at 365m, on sandy, western-facing slopes. It was native fermented in stainless. Wild plum, wild blackberry, thorns ride through a sleek palate, hugged with finely grippy tannins through an herbal kissed finish. Easy swell of acidity even in the warm 2020.
“A perfumed nose of red cherry, crushed raspberry and fresh sage. Medium-bodied with lovely freshness and energy. Bright, with fine, creamy tannins. Tasty barbera. From organically/biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink now.” - 92 points, James Suckling, August 2, 2022.
