Sauvignon Blanc Gamlitz
The Sattler family has been growing wine in the village of Gamlitz since 1887, and they were one of the first in the region to bottle high quality dry white wines under their own name in the 1970s. Willi Sattler is the current family member in charge and has grown the estate to 35 hectares of biodynamically farmed vines in some of the region’s most famous vineyards. This village wine come from steeply sloping quartz and limestone vineyards 350-450m. It was native fermented in stainless (partial MLF) where it remained on lees for 5 months. Lightly smoked stone, green apple, pear skin wraps around a lees bedded, subtle passionfruit core. This is more tropical than you might expect from south Austria, and quite a lovely surprise. Very textural, this finishes with a lingering quartzite buzz.
"An expressive, grassy white powered by a zesty mineral energy that invigorates green apple and white peach flavors. Medium length, with green herbs, smoke and crushed flint echoing through the finish. Bone-dry, with nice concentration. Drink now. 2,500 cases made, 120 cases imported.” - 90 points, Kristin Bieler, Wine Spectator
