Champagne Marie Copinet
Côtes des Sézanne, Champagne, France
Marie-Laure Copinet and her winemaker husband Alexandre Kowal have taken over her family's estate, founded by her father Jacques in 1975. Before then, the Copinets were selling their fruit to Moët, but Jacques' work at Taittinger led him to decide to create their own grower champagne estate. They are based in the tiny Champagne village of Montgenost (population 140) in the Côtes des Sézanne, and they own 10.5 hectares of vineyards in Côtes des Sézanne, Côtes des Bar, and Vallée de la Marne, producing only 5,500 cases annually. They began organic conversion in 2018.

In this case this is Pinot Noir from 2 lieu-dit rooted in the kimmeridgian soils of the Côtes des Bar. From the 2021 vintage, this was native fermented, with full MLF, in stainless and 15% oak barrels. It was disgorged November 2025, with 0 dosage. Fine boned and structural, with a brace of white cherry and chalk framing cherry blossom, raspberry, lemon pith and peel, bergamot, crushed stones across a shimmering base that lingers long on the finish. Very fine, very finessed, very pure.
“Pure strawberries and violets, together with bright lime-peel freshness. Firm acidity on the medium- to full-bodied palate with fine and long mousse and a lemon-bush finish. 100% pinot noir. From organically grown grapes with Ecocert certification. Disgorged in 2023. Dosage 0g/L. Tense style. Drinkable now, but it will gain complexity with aging.” 94 points, Aldo Fiordelli, JamesSuckling.com

In this case, this is chardonnay on the chalky soils of Montgenost, and from the 2021 vintage. This was native fermented with full MLF in stainless, and was disgorged November 2025 with 0 dosage. Taut and chalk-lined, with meyer lemon, crunchy green apple, oyster shell streaking along the sleek palate, with a kiss of meringue on the core, but otherwise left pure, confident, and uncompromising. Memorable.
“100% Chardonnay from lieu-dit La Grande Montagne in Montgenost. No pesticides, no herbicides. Dosage 0 g/l. Precision verging on austerity – a long, steely line of acidity that flies the length of the wine like an arrow from a crossbow. There is no arguing with this wine, no chance of deflecting it. Stony citrus, stony power. It softened a fraction, however, when paired with salty fresh cheese, revealing some nuttiness, a hint of crisp fruit. A towering ice queen of a wine but not without a heart. Drink 2024-2032.” - 17/20 points, Jancis Robinson

Nos Pas Dans… La Terre Complantée Brut Nature

Complantée is a field blend of Pinot Noir and Meunier from the plot of La Charbonnière, in the village of Brouillet, situated in the little-known Vallée de l'Ardre, east of Reims. The soils are dark and crumbly, as seen on the label. It was native fermented and vinified in large oak (60%) and stainless, and is from the 2019 vintage. It remained sur lattes until November 2025, when it was disgorged with 0 dosage.
Burnished cherry, wild raspberry, lemon peel and pith is textured with chalk dust, and centred on a candied lemon meringue core. There's alluring and moreish salinity woven throughout this wine, propelling it through a lengthy textured finish. Such balance and poise here, in a seamless wine of place. Special.
"From a complanted parcel of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier in the Vallée de l'Ardre. Lieu-dit La Charbonnière. Zero dosage. Lemon-blossom, lemon-curd nose. Very slightly richer and rounder than the Copinet Chardonnay wines, but with masses of chalky texture and flavour. Like all these Copinet champagnes, terse and brisk on the finish. Drink 2024-2028.” 16.5/20 points, Jancis Robinson
