MIXED CASE : LIGHTER REDS 15

Each case contains two bottles of the following wines:

Olivier Coste Cinsault 2021, IGP Pays d’Oc, Languedoc, France. $22
Since his childhood, Olivier Coste’s favourite places to play have been the vineyards and the family wine cellar at Domaine Montrose, his family’s wine estate founded in 1701 in Pézenas. With this upbringing, Olivier developed a profound attachment to the Languedoc’s terroir and landscape, and later to its wines. This Cinsault grows on the schist soils of Château des Adouzes, in Faugères. This underwent a 3 week maceration and fermentation in concrete tanks, where it remained until bottling. Wild blackberry, plum, is scented with a scrubby wild rosemary and iris, and lined with light, long tannins through the saline kissed finish. A charming red ready to enjoy now with your wild mushrooms.

Niepoort NAT'Cool! Tinto Dão 2021, IG Terras de Dão, Portugal. $26 / 1L
Dirk Niepoort's NAT'Cool! range of wines were created to meet certain criteria : be made as naturally as possible, be low alcohol, be terroir-driven, use native grapes to the region, be affordable, and be so smashable that it's only sold in 1L bottles. In 2020, the Nat Cool family grew, with this foray into the Dão region, and grapes from the granite slopes of the Serra da Estrela Mountain Range. This is a blend of 40-80 year old vines of Jaen, Tinta Pinheira, Alfrocheiro, Baga, and Touriga Nacional. This was native fermented and aged 6 months in stainless. Pouring a pale hue, this slight red is lifted with wild flowers, wild herbs, perfumed wild cherry and plum, all laced with grippy, granitic texture, and framed with long, light tannins. The finish lingers with light white pepper and crushed stones. Certainly smashable.

Carter Mollenhauer Los Queules Cinsault 2020, DO Itata, Chile. $53
Husband and wife team Edgard Carter and Karine Mollenhauer run their family winery in the Maule, making a few small-production wines from indigenous grapes. Their idea is to elevate the reputation of purity and authenticity of Chilean wine through organic farming, and minimal intervention in the cellar. This single vineyard, ungrafted, dry farmed bush vine Cinsault is their Cru from Guarilihue Alto. It was planted in 1955 in rocky soils at 265m. The wine was native fermented with 80% foot trodden whole clusters, and vinified slowly in a Chilean tinaja, with maceration lasting 138 days. It then aged 4 months in older barrels. There were no sulphites used during vinification or aging. So fragrant, with lavender, rosemary, iris, wild mint, native pine. Salted, pitchy, and herbaceous. So intense, but so light, with lifted, finessed, expressive aromatics and long, fine tannins with ample salinity throughout, lingering on the finish. An intoxicating wine. 824 bottles.

Bodegas Peique Tinto Mencia 2021, DO Bierzo, Spain. $22
Bodegas Peique is a family winery currently owned and operated by Luis and Sagrario Peique and their children. The winery, which is located in Valtuille de Abajo, Bierzo, emerged in 1999 as a joint partnership of three generations of the Peique family, whose winemaking dates back to 1912. The current winemaker is Jorge Peique; Mar Peique serves as General Manager. Their vineyards are almost 100 years old and are planted with Godello and Mencía. This Mencía comes from 45-55 year old vines, at 450-500m. It was fermented and briefly aged in stainless, to preserve the bright, fresh, fragrant and wild black fruit.

Rolet Arbois Trousseau 2017, AOC Arbois, Jura, France. $30
Trousseau vines (30 years old) were planted in Montigny-les-Arsures, on hillsides on the localities of Chagnon and L'Euvrin, as well as Arbois' Montesserin. The marl and clay soils are ideal for the trousseau, as proven by this charming wine. After destemming and a few days of maceration, it was fermented in stainless for three weeks and then aged for 9 months in a split of stainless and foudre. Pouring a light, dusky crimson hue, this streams wild raspberry, perfumed cherry, forest wild flowers, and a finely buzzy texture, all wrapped with slightly tuggy tannins. This current release means the winery has done all the aging for you. Drink now, ideally with wild mushroom dishes.

Suertes del Marques 7 Fuentes 2020, DO Valle de la Orotava, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. $27
100+ year old ungrafted and organic Listan Negro is splashed with 10% Castellana Negra in this singular wine, showcasing Tenerife's volcanic soils and vineyard altitude up to 750m. Suertes del Marqués considers this their 'village wine', and an introduction to their range. Careful aging for 9 months in concrete and neutral French oak gives this lighter red ample fine texture and finesse, with wild flowers, wild plum, pink grapefruit, and stony salts wafting throughout the slender frame, woven with volcanic reduction and pink peppercorns. Tannins are spiderweb fine and strong, and acidity is effortless. Give this a light chill and some airtime in the glass before enjoying liberally.
