MIXED CASE : Wieninger

Each six pack contains the following wines:

2 x Gemischter Satz 2021. $27
This classic Austrian field blend is a mix of biodynamic cofermented riesling, grüner veltliner, neuburger, weissburgunder, and welschriesling, from both Nussberg (limestone) and Bisamberg (loess). This had 3 hours skin contact and was native fermented and rested in stainless. Juicy white peach, green herbs, pear skin, subtle anise run along a silken, streamline palate, laced with salinity. Fresh, dry, fragrant, and fun, this is a natural for fragrant Thai / Japanese dishes.

1 x Gemischter Satz Ried Ulm 1ÖTW 2020. $55
From Fritz Wieninger's masterpiece site, Ulm, this classic field blend of Pinot Blanc, Neuburger, Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner, Sylvaner, Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, Traminer, and Riesling is from 75 year old vines, and planted in the fossil rich limestone soils of Nussberg, close to the Danube and bordering Vienna. It was native cofermented and aged in 80% stainless, 20% slavonian oak for 1 year. Pear skin, green apple, apple blossom stream along a tight palate, with ample buzzy limestone minerality stretching long, finishing with a saline wash. Powerful, with great extract, priming this harmonious white for ageing.

1 x Grüner Veltliner Bisamberg 2021. $29
This is a new village level release, from Bisamberg's loess soils. This GV had a little skin contact, and was native fermented in stainless, with no MLF. Streaming and arrow sleek, with green apple, Asian pear, quince, and buzzy saline / spices washing over the finish.

1 x Grüner Veltliner Bisamberg Ried Herrnholz 2021. $41
From Bisamberg's loess soils, and the single vineyard (Ried) Herrnholz, a very sandy site, which was the first Fritz’ father planted, in the 1960s. This was fermented and aged in stainless. Expansive, saline, with quince blossoms, pear skin, ripe white peach, and gentle, persistent buzzy minerality through the lingering finish.

1 x Gruner Veltliner Nussberg 2021. $30
This village wine is from 3 plots, all on Nussberg's limestone soils. It was fermented in a mix of 2/3 ss, 1/3 foudre, with partial MLF. Quite open and approachable now, with subtle pear blossoms opening into green apple, elderflower, quince skin across a stony underlay, lingering with salinity.

With a name like Fritz Wieninger, you have to trust that wine is wine is in his blood. Fritz is a pioneer of the New Vienna wine movement, combining modernity and progress with the traditions of the region and of his family, who have been making wine for over 100 years. Fritz is the winemaker for two Viennese wineries: Wieninger, and Hajszan Neumann. Hajszan Neumann is Fritz’ natural project, where he has greater flexibility to experiment with low-to-no intervention winemaking techniques. Both wineries are certified biodynamic; Fritz is the co-president of RESPEKT with Fred Loimer, as well as a founding member and chairman of the Wien Wein growers association. The vineyards and wineries are in the heart of Vienna, Wien as the locals call it, and the only city in the world where vineyards flourish inside city limits. Steeped in history, the Nussberg vineyard sites house some of the oldest vines in Austria.
