SCEG Aglianico del Vulture
In 2016, Elena Fucci, responsible for saving her family’s high altitude, volcanic soiled vineyards and solidifying the appellation with her singular Titolo cru, began another passion project, SCEG (translation pomegranate), to help out friends of her 94 year old grandfather Generoso. To preserve their vines and tradition, she makes this special wine from his friends’ vines, four parcels near her family’s vineyards, and vines ageing 70+ years. SGEC (pronounced Sheg) is organically farmed Aglianico, spending one year in 500L tonneaux and 6 months in bottle before release. Fragrant plums, wild blueberry, perfumed roses, and fleshy black cherry weave their way through this striking red, taut with volcanic soils and altitude, and layered with old vine wisdom. Tannins are long, fine, and lightly grippy, giving structure without weighing this charming wine down. The finish lingers with buzzy minerality and scrubby herbs. Drinking beauty now and with time ahead.
"The 2022 Aglianico del Vulture SCEG blossoms in the glass with a dark blend of dried violets, crushed stones and citrus-tinged black berries. This flows across the palate, savory yet cool-toned, with depths of dark red fruits and tactile minerality that settles in toward the close. It finishes grippy and long yet still fresh, leaving behind hints of tangerine and an air of tobacco and ash. Drink 2025-2030.” - 92 points, Eric Guido, Vinous, March 2024
