Tenuta Fanti
Tenuta Fanti
Toscana, Italy
The Tenuta Fanti estate has belonged to the Fanti family since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It extends across 300 hectares in Toscana, 52 hectares of which are specialized certified sustainable vineyards, 60 hectares are olive orchards with 8,500 olive trees, 80 hectares are used for seed plots, and 70 hectares are forests. In the early 1970s, Filippo Fanti became leader of the company, and refocused its direction towards high quality, starting with the soils. He sustainably replanted the vineyards and olive trees after a careful selection of the most suitable plots within the estate. In 2004, construction began on their modern and spacious gravity flow cellar for winemaking, ageing, and refinement. Tenuta Fanti aims to offer sustainably produced, high quality wines which express the unique terroir of Castelnuovo dell' Abate.
Filippo’s 40+ years of experience as wine-grower was complemented by the energy and determination of his winemaker daughter Elisa, who joined the family company in 2007, and more recently by second daughter Elena.

Soralisa Bianco
This blend of 45% Vermentino, 45% Viognier, 5% Malvasia Toscana and 5% Trebbiano Toscano was from clay soils around 210-370m, and vines ranging from 10-30 years. It was fermented and rested in stainless on lees until the following spring.
Fragrant yellow fruits are met with fresh green herbs and crushed white peppercorns in this intriguing blend, one that buzzes along the palate to a snappy tangerine twist. Quite smart, and certainly unique, and a lovely choice for grilled calamari or fritto misto di verdure.
"Far from the Montalcino norm and not only because the Soralisa is a white wine, of 45 percent each vermentino and viognier, also with (five each) malvasia and trebbiano toscano. Somewhat of a unicorn for the place and the trend is moving towards "I Bianci" in these parts. Fanti’s chiming in makes for a rather interpretive take. Saltier and leaner than expected with the viognier somewhat silent in the mix. Feels briny and dry as the desert but all in all the wine is a joy to sip. Bring on the Pici al ragù di coniglio. Drink 2026-2028. Tasted January 2026." - 90 points, Michael Godel, WineAlign.com

Vin Santo
Vin Santo is a very special, historic, and long-lived wine. Fanti continues the tradition with this special sweet. This is a blend of 40% Trebbiano Toscano, 40% Malvasia Toscana, and 20% San Colombano, from 30 year old vines. The whole bunches are hung in a ventilated drying room for 4-6 months, where they desiccate, and the sugars and acids concentrate. They are then pressed gently into small oak barrels called caratelli, filled 2/3 full, and sealed with cement for a long, slow ferment and 5 years' aging. Once cracked open and transferred to bottle, they remain for 6 months prior to release. With such a labour-intensive and low-yielding process, only 1,200 375ml bottles are produced each vintage. Pouring a rich golden brown hue, this intense, sweet, syrupy wine is dense with maple, butterscotch, burnished caramel, pipe tobacco, dried apricot, roasted hazelnuts, and caramelized orange peel. Multilayered and very complex, this is best enjoyed solo.

Rosso di Montalcino
Made from 15-20-year-old vines, the wine was fermented for 20-25 days in stainless before ageing for one year in oak barrels, 300L French oak barriques, and 3,000L oak barrels. The wine then aged in a bottle for 7 months before release.
Perfumed raspberry, worn wood, cherry fills the slight frame, edged with grippy tannins, and finishing with a drying rasp of spices. Best enjoyed with grilled lamb or sausage.
"The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino opens with a cool mix of mentholated herbs, white smoke and citrus-tinged blackberries. It's ripe in style yet with a core of zesty acidity to balance, displaying spiced cherries and traces of inner sage. It leaves the palate drenched in primary concentration, finishing long and staining with a pleasantly bitter tinge." - 91 points, Eric Guido, Vinous

Brunello di Montalcino Vallocchio 2019
This comes from four south-east facing plots of 20-30-year-old vines (Vigna Bellavista, Vigna Sassone, Vigna Casabandi, and Vigna Macchiarelle Nuova) in the heart of the Fanti estate, historically known as Vallocchio. After a ferment in stainless, this aged 30 months in wood, 50% in 500L tonneaux, and the rest in big oak barrels of 30hl. When bottled, this remains an extra year before release.
"The Fanti 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vallocchio reveals a pronounced savory side with tobacco leaf, roasted chestnut husk, dark plum, honeycomb or honey-roasted almond. The tannins are resolved, almost silky at this point, and there is plenty of concentrated fruit to build up the rich textural impact. The alcohol content clocks in at 15%, but it is nicely folded into the wine's dark fruity fiber. This is a 9,500-bottle release. Drink 2025-2040.” - 95 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Poggio Torto
The Tenuta Fanti estate has belonged to the Fanti family since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It extends across 300 hectares in Toscana, 52ha of which are specialized certified sustainable vineyards. The name Poggio Torto (leaning hill) comes from the irregular shape of the hill Poggio d’Arna, that is in front of the winery.
This blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah comes from young vines rooted in schist and clay. It was fermented in stainless before 4 months in oak barrels, 50% in barriques of 3hl, and 50% in big oak barrels of 50 hL. Ripe blackberry, cherry, boysenberry floods the generous palate, framed with ample soft and sticky tannins which take this to an herbal finish. Best enjoyed with grilled pork / veg.
“A rich and flavorful red with plenty of fruit here full of dark morello cherries, mulberries and some violets. Flavorful and direct on the palate with a pretty full body and some nicely chewy yet supportive tannins. Drink through to 2027.” - 91 points, Zekun Shuai, JamesSuckling.com, September 2, 2023

"Filigree complexity here with a multilayered profile, including balsamic tones, not so obvious red cherries and dried fruit, licorice, light camphor and fresh violets. Full-bodied, energetic palate with firm, velvety tannins and a chalky finish. Crisp, integrated acidity. Rich and vibrant, despite some warmth. Best after 2026.” - 94 points, James Suckling
