Domaine Michel Prunier et Fille
Domaine Michel Prunier et Fille
Bourgogne, France
Michel Prunier works alongside his daughter Estelle who joined him in 2004 after concluding her wine studies and work experience in Australia and Bordeaux. Michel himself studied in the Champagne region at the viticultural college at Avize. They represent the fourth and fifth generations to make wine here, Michel having grown the estate to 12 ha from only two hectares in 1986. As a result they have vineyards in Auxey, Beaune, Meursault, Volnay, Pommard, Chorey and the Hautes-Côtes, but the pride and joy remains the holding of Auxey-Duresses 1er cru Clos du Val. Three smaller premier crus in the village Bas de Duresses, Grands Champs and Climat du Val are always blended together. “A wine should frankly express its terroir and vintage”, says Michel, so they adapt to each plot, ploughing some for better aeration and drainage while planting grass in others to reduce erosion and control vine vigour. Respecting the environment using sustainable, lutte raisonnée methods is the modus operandi here.

Bourgogne Pinot Noir
From a very cool, stony, calcareous slope, and vines 50 years old, this pinot noir was macerated for 10 days and fermented in stainless before resting in older wood for 10 months. Fragrant cherry, sandalwood, black plum is tinged with forest moss, and framed with astringent tannins, finishing with a bitter espresso / dark chocolate note. Best taken with heavier fall fare.

Auxey-Duresses Clos du Val 1er cru
From very stony, south facing calcareous soils and 52 year old vines, this was 50% whole bunch, fermented in stainless before resting in barrels (25% new) with bâtonnage for 15 months. Quite fragrant, with perfumed cherries, black cherries, red currants, and plums filling the mouth, chiseled by fine, firm tannins which take this to a lingering buzzy finish. The soils are quite present here, imbuing this finessed and elegant wine with a persistant vibrancy. Drinking very well know, and with some time ahead in cellar.

Auxey-Duresses Blanc
This comes from three parcels in Auxey-Duresses: le Village, les Closeaux, and les Hautées, with calcareous, well-draining soils and vines averaging 34 years. This was fermented in a mix of stainless and wood, before resting in barrels (10% new) with bâtonnage for 10 months. You can feel the structure of the soils, and elevage, right away, with stony bones framing lemon, green apple, fresh hazelnuts through the lingering, limestone buzzing finish. Though drinking very well now, this is still showing some youth, and will continue to grow and reward with time in your cellar.

Bourgogne Chardonnay
From a very stony, east-facing slope in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, these Chardonnay vines are 28 years of age. After a stainless ferment, this rested in older barrels with bâtonnage for 10 months. The lees is evident, bedding the medium body and basing the lemon, cream, subtle apple blossom atop. There's an ample stoniness throughout, reflective of the bony, calcareous soils. Holds freshness well, considering the hot 2018 vintage. Drinking smartly now, and with some time ahead.

Crémant de Bourgogne Blanc Brut
This traditional method sparkler sources fruit from three sites in Auxey-Duresses and Chorey-les-Beaune, with average vine age at 35 years, and from a mix of estate and grower vineyards. The blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, and 20% Aligoté was fermented in stainless, before going into bottle for secondary fermentation the following summer. This spent 24 months on lees. The creamy palate leads with yellow apple, green apple, tight cherry blossom, lightly toasted meringue, flax on a bright palate, finishing with a chalky grip. Smart crémant, ready for enjoying now.

Côteaux Bourguignons
From villages around Auxey-Duresses, this blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 55% Gamay grows on cool, stony calcareous clay soils, facing north west, and from vines 41 years old. The destemmed grapes were fermented in stainless, before resting in older wood barrels for 13 months.
Fragrant plum, cherry, and raspberry rule the slight palate, housed by long, finely sticky tannins through to the salted finish. The Gamay gives this an easy friendliness, and propensity for drinking now.
