Podere 414 is the personal project of oenologist Maurizio Castelli, and the result of his dream of an integrated farm, run according to biodynamic principles. He purchased the 30 hectare property in Maremma’s DOCG Morellino di Scansano the 1960’s, 13 hectares of which are now planted to certified organic vineyards. “414” is the house number attributed to their property by the former reform land authority, during the division of the estate and the redistribution of the land to the farmers. These families inherited totally wild lands, and they adopted an almost exclusively subsistence farming model. Maurizio’s son, Simone Castelli, now oversees the property, together with his wife Maja. The vineyards are high density, with 6800 vines per hectare, thus the average yield is low. Approximately 85 percent of the vineyards are planted with Sangiovese, and the rest with Ciliegiolo, Alicante, and Colorino.
