Aphros Wine
Aphros Wine
Vinho Verde, Portugal
The calm, confident and introspective Vasco Croft took over his mother’s semi-abandoned 17th century family estate in 2003 in the Lima Valley in the north of Vinho Verde. Casal do Paço has the soul of an old Quinta, and was the starting point of Aphros. It spreads over nearly 20 hectares of land and forests, six of which are vineyards and four of chestnuts orchards. At its centre stands a granite 16th century 2-storey manor house complete with chapel. The wine cellar on the first floor dates back to the origin of the house.
Vasco assembled a team of consultants and began conversion to biodynamics in 2006, and today is regarded as one of the pioneering biodynamic vintners in Portugal.

Aphros
Pan Sparkling Rosé
Hard to be more natural than Aphros' founder and winemaker Vasco Croft. This biodynamic, sparkling vinhão comes from Vinho Verde’s Lima subregion, and its granitic soils. After a brief amount of skin contact, this was native fermented in stainless with 4 months on lees prior to heading to bottle for secondary ferment and 26 months on lees. It was disgorged with 2.5 g/L RS. Juicy wild strawberry, red apple, light toast, and bitter berries skip across the lightly fizzy palate, finishing with an astringent orange twist.

Loureiro
Vasco Croft is one of the pioneering biodynamic vintners in Portugal, and Aphros is his personal project. From Vinho Verde's Lima subregion, this loureiro spent time on skins before pressing into inox for fermentation and two months ageing on lees before filtration and bottling. Tight and zippy with lime, lemon verbena, mandarin, melon on a slight (11%), skippy, stony palate, with a subtle granite buzz on the finish. Not your typical floral Loureiro.

Phaunus Pet Nat Rosé
Hard to be more natural than Aphros' founder and winemaker Vasco Croft. This biodynamic, sparkling split of Alvarelhão and Vinhão was fermented in stainless, finishing in bottle, and disgorged after 3 months. Red flowers, red currant, light herbs rule the bone dry, brisk palate, finishing with a sour cherry twist. Beauty freshness and authenticity in this pared down pet nat.

Phaunus Amphora Palhete
Hard to be more natural than Aphros' founder and winemaker Vasco Croft. He made this wine, and others in the Phaunus range, without electricity. Palhete is the local name for a wine that is made in a farmer's style, by blending red and white grapes to create a low-alcohol wine to drink during the day. This biodynamically farmed and produced blend of Loureiro (white) and Vinhão (red) was crushed, destemmed, and pressed by hand power, then native fermented on skins in a large beeswax-lined talha (the traditional clay amphorae of Alentejo) for 7 months before it was bottled without filtration. The colour is a cloudy peach hue, echoed in the apricot / peach pith ruling the astringent palate, and joined by wild strawberry, raspberry vinegar, pink peppercorns, and a furry grip of tannins that brackets this wine. Unusual, to say the least, and it works. Chill and enjoy.

This biodynamically farmed and produced loureiro was crushed, destemmed, and pressed by hand power, then native fermented on skins in a large beeswax-lined talha (the traditional clay amphorae of Alentejo) for 7 months before it was bottled without filtration. Pouring slightly cloudy in the glass, this rings with tight apricot oil, elderflower, marmalade, tangerine peel and pith. Ample tight nimble pithiness grips along the sides. Very alive, long, and vibrant in the mouth, finishing with lightly warming honeycomb. Pure, clean, focused amber wine, surprisingly concentrated for 11.5 degrees, and a lovely different view of Loureiro.

Loureiro 2014
Vasco Croft is one of the pioneering biodynamic vintners in Portugal, and Aphros is his personal project. From Vinho Verde's Lima subregion, this loureiro spent time on skins before pressing into inox for fermentation and two months ageing on lees before filtration and bottling. Loureiro is showing some aged character here, with some honeyed notes wrapping around pine nuts, honeydew, apricot kernel and wet cement. While the wine isn't as vibrant as in youth, this current release shows an interesting lens for loureiro.

Yakkos Sparkling Vinhão Grande Reserva
Hard to be more natural than Aphros' founder and winemaker Vasco Croft. This biodynamic, sparkling vinhão comes from Vinho Verde’s Lima subregion, and its granitic soils. It was foot-trodden and native fermented in granite lagares, and aged on lees before heading to bottle for secondary ferment, where it remained for 67 months before disgorgement with 3 g/L. Pouring a dark purple hue, this dry, brisk fizz streams dried violets, blackcurrant, black cherry, thorns along a tight, crunchy palate, with the tart, herbal fruit well balanced by the slight blip of RS. Lambrusco-esque, this is an impressive, authentic, food-friendly fizz.

Loureiro
Vasco Croft is one of the pioneering biodynamic vintners in Portugal, and Aphros is his personal project. From Vinho Verde's Lima subregion, this loureiro spent time on skins before pressing into stainless for native fermentation (no MLF) and a few months ageing on lees (no bâtonnage) before filtration and bottling.
Very lean and light (10.5%) with crunchy green apple, Asian pear, green spring veg streaking across a slight, saline frame, finishing with a white grapefruit twist. Enjoy this snappy little white with fish / veg tapas.
"The Aphros by Vasco Croft, a.k.a. Portugal’s wine Warhol is a biodynamic farmed and executed varietal dreamer and charmer that has come a loving way over the last 10 years. Croft and team have honed their witchcraft, found the sweet spot and now elevate loureiro to heights it rarely imagines. The concentration is now above and beyond, the lemon intensity fulfilling and the honey bees’ nectar makes it all possible - and come together. The wine is now emulsified, in locomotion, smouldering and commanding. Hard to find a substitute for an Aphros VV. Drink 2025-2028. Tasted May 2025." - 91 points, Michael Godel, WineAlign.com
"The 2023 Loureiro is similar to the Ten. Its from the direct pressing of the grapes and fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts at a slightly higher temperature, so it's a little less exuberant but with a subtle note of honey and beeswax intermixed with the white fruit and flowers. It didn't go through malolactic fermentation and has slightly higher maturity, with 10.5% alcohol, and better balance. 55,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2024 after two months with lees but without bâtonnage. Drink 2024-2027.” - 90 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, March 27, 2025
