Juxtaposed Fiano 2021, McLaren Vale. $53
From McLaren Vale's Sellicks Foothills subregion, and Lacey vineyard, this Fiano was native fermented on full lees in a mix of old oak barrels and tank. Ripe pear, white peach is flooded with juicy pink apple, and seasoned with stony spice, with a pear skin grip pinning in the sides. Juicy and joyous, ready for cracking now.

Juxtaposed Old Vine Grenache 2020, McLaren Vale. $60
From the Wait Vineyard in Blewitt Springs, and the Smart Vineyard in Clarendon, this year's OV Grenache is particularly concentrated due to the drought year and poor weather. This was fermented in open fermenters, pressed to tank for settling, and racked to old oak barrels for aging. Medicinal hewn cherry, raspberry, red earth rests on a base of worn leather, studded with flake salts, and glowing with a gentle humming acidity. Tannins are worn fine and supple, hugging this through a pink peppercorn spiced finish. Lovely concentration and thoughtfulness here.

Juxtaposed Old Vine Shiraz 2020, McLaren Vale. $60
From the sandy corner block of the Wait Vineyard in Blewitt Springs, planted in 1943, this was crushed and destemmed, fermented in open top fermenters, and aged in old Hungarian oak. Sultry blackberry, black cherry, medicinal boysenberry fills the chewy, velvet palate, perfumed with musk, scented with light smoke, and framed with plump, sticky tannins. Ample concentration here, ready for your roasted pork / veg dishes.

DogRidge MVP Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, McLaren Vale. $82
DogRidge's sustainably farmed vineyards are home to some of the oldest vines in McLaren Vale, with 80+ year old Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon growing on their McLaren Flat site. MVP is their Most Valuable Player, and the pinnacle of the winery. Graphite, iron, tobacco, worn cherry, ripe sweet strawberries flood a muscular palate, buoyant with acidity and seasoned with fine spice. Tannins are sinewy, but well absorbed by the dense fruit, taking this to a warming cinnamon and mint finish. Ideal with rare beef and / or roasted root veg, this is drinking very smartly now, nearly a decade along.

DogRidge MVP Petit Verdot 2014, McLaren Vale. $82
This Petit Verdot hasn’t been made since 2005. Smoked stones, crushed violets, boysenberry compote, liquorice work through a muscular palate, with grippy tannins still quite present, though now thankfully somewhat absorbed into the fruit, a decade on. There's a swell of acidity to raise this chewy wine through a lingering spiced finish. One to enjoy now with roasted meats.

DogRidge MVP Shiraz 2014, McLaren Vale. $72
This Shiraz comes off their Digs Vineyard, Block DV4, planted in 1941 on sandy loams over limestone. With 10% whole bunch, this was native fermented with extended skin contact and spent 6 months in new French oak before being racked to older barrels. It remains in wood for around 2 years prior to bottling. This is a dense and compact Shiraz, with dried violets, dried blue and black fruits flooding a full palate, one kissed with subtle smoke and light cracked pepper, and framed by sticky tannins to a gently warming kirsch finish. There is a swell of freshness to counter the weight here, thankfully, and this near-decade old wine is drinking beauty right now.
