NAT’Cool! Branco

NAT’Cool is Dirk Niepoort's line of wines that are low-intervention, low-alcohol, available only in a 1L format, affordable, and highly smashable. This cloudy pét-nat ish Vinho Verde, comes from the sub-region of Lousada, and is a mix of Azal, Arinto, Avesso, Trajadura, and Loureiro, and vines 25-30 years. After beginning ferment in stainless, it was bottled with a few grams RS, so it could continue to percolate in the bottle, affording it a gentle spritz.

Lightly hazy straw hue, this streams meadow grass, green and yellow apple, gooseberry across the slight 11% palate, finishing with a grapefruit twist. Fun and fresh, as intended.

This Alvarinho came from three plots of 25+ year old vines, rooted in the granitic soils of the village of Paderne, Melgaço. The destemmed fruit was native fermented and aged in used, 1000L and 2000L oval vats of eastern European oak. It remained there, with no sulphur, for 12 months on lees, without bâtonnage, prior to a 5 month stint in stainless before bottling.

Light lime, lemon pith scents the stony palate, one bright with green apple, crisp Anjou pear, and finishing with a kiss of honeysuckle. Tidy and neat, with a fine veil of lees to cushion. All about the place, and a lovely raw view of Albariño’s expression on granite.

This youthful red may show a (Canadian themed!) comic on the label, but make no mistake, this is a serious wine, from one of the world's top winemakers, Dirk Niepoort. This is a blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela from the Cima Corgo's schistous soils, and vines up to 40 years in age. This was native fermented in stainless, and aged in a mix of stainless and oak for 6 months.

Fresh and fragrant, with black raspberry, cherry, plum filling a juicy core. Wrapped with slight, sticky tannins, and buoyed by bright acidity, this friendly, smart red is primed for drinking now, all at a welcome 12.5%.

This grows on the island of Pico, in the Azores archipelago, off Portugal, and its pure volcanic, black basaltic, scrabbly rocky soils. This blend of 85% Arinto de Azores (unrelated to mainland Portugal's Arinto) and 15% Verdejo was whole bunch pressed, and fermented in 600-1000L stainless barrels, laid down on their sides for a rest and bâtonnage prior to bottling.

Light on its feet, this medium-bodied white is fresh with wild melon, subtle spice, pear blossom over a cushion of lees, finishing with a mouthwatering saline wash. Lovely glimpse of the volcanic, marine-trinsic Azores.

This pale pink comes from Portugal's Pico Island, in the Azores archipelago, and its pure volcanic, black basaltic, scrabbly rocky soils. This blends 5-30+ year old saborinho, agronomica, aragones, touriga nacional and many other co-planted varieties across 13 vineyards, sustainably grown in wee plots (2 to 6 bush trained vines per square), planted in 1991 at sea level. This is a partial saignée from António Maçanita's Tinto Vulcanico, along with partial whole bunch, and including some cofermentation. Stainless steel preserves the crisp fruit, and no maceration created the pale peach hue. Two 5000L stainless barrels were lain on their sides to give more lees / wine contact and texture on the palate.

Perfumed rose petal, wild strawberry, and spring raspberry leap across the palate, brisk with juicy pink grapefruit acidity, and lashed with marine salinity. Fresh, energetic, and friendly, this is a welcome choice this summer.

After a whole bunch press and a native ferment in primarily stainless barrels (the second pressing goes into older barrels), this remained there on lees for six months before bottling.

Meadow grass, elderflower, and white grapefruit sail along the sleek, lifted palate, scented with pine nuts and lit with a buzzy grip that lingers on the finish. Juicy and bright and full of energy.

The Ann Faure range allows the Cravens to explore different sites, and different grapes. The name is an ode to Jeanine’s family heritage of farming and also the middle names of Jeanine and Mick’s children. As with all their wines, this was native fermented, without any additions, and with full MLF. The 2025 Pinot Noir comes from the upper slopes of the Floor ward in Stellenbosch, and 12 year old vines of clone 777. The destemmed fruit was fermented in concrete over 7 days, then pressed of into a mix of stainless and concrete to rest.

Pouring a light hue, this crunchy and pretty Pinot is bright with cranberry acidity, and wrapped with lithe tannins. Enjoy with a slight chill. 12%

From Stellenbosch's Devon Valley, and its iron rich clay soils at 300m, this clone S22 syrah was planted in 2002. Unlike Jeanine and Mick's other reds, syrah is always entirely whole bunch. This rested with skins for 9 days, before moving into open top stainless bins for foot trodding and native ferment. It then spends 10ish months in concrete.

Perfumed blackberry, boysenberry, dark violets course through this darker shaded, though medium bodied syrah, with firm tannins pinning in the sides, and the clay soils and 2024 vintage adding a shade more heft to the core. Cracked peppercorn linger on the stony finish, welcoming partnering with herb-decked lamb.

From 32 year old dry farmed bush vines on decomposed granites and silica sands of Stelly's Rustenhof vineyard, this is one of the Bredall family farms that the Cravens started using in 2017. They share the site with Bernard Bredall and his striking Sons of Sugarland label. Rustenhof is one of the region's most coastal vineyards, and you feel it in the freshness of this lifted cinsault. Destemmed and whole berry, with 6 days on skins, this was native fermented and rested in concrete, where it remained until bottling.

Wild plum, cherry, boysenberry is scented with scrubby resinous herbs and mustard seed on the lifted palate, its svelte body framed with long, fine tannins that finish with pink peppercorn and crushed stones. A charmer.

From Stellenbosch's Newlands Vineyard and its heavy iron-rich koffeklip soils, these pinot gris vines are 20 years old, facing east. It's rare enough to find PG in ZA, and unheard of to find one as memorable as this. The 2024 was picked over two tries, and after destemming, had 6 days skin contact (until it goes dry) in concrete before being pressed and racked back into concrete for 5 months.

Pouring a pretty cherry / salmon hue, this textural wine is woven with wild orange, pink grapefruit, bergamot, and flake salts along a long, saline palate, finishing with a kiss of fresh tobacco. Not crazy acidity, but it's not missed with everything else going on. A lovely food wine, especially for umami-rich dishes. 13000 bottles produced.

This NV biodynamic orange wine blends Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, Riesling, Chardonnay, Traminer, and Muskateller from sedimentary, limestone gravels, and vines up to 85 years old in the Gumpoldskirchen. This was partial whole cluster native fermented in barrels (some lots on skins) for 8-10 months on full lees. This dry wine was bottled in spring 2022 without fining or filtration, evident in the slight haze to the medium yellow hue.

Apricot, peach fuzz, potpourri musk, and potent lime pith run the lightly grippy palate to a tart, light ashen finish. Fun pairing wine.

"This pours brassy orange, with some haziness. It has a ripe nose of apricot/pumpkin with tea, ginger and caraway spices. It is medium weight, nicely fresh and soft with a hint of sweetness. "Gluegglich Glückliches (meaning happy or lucky) is a mouthful of many things, not the least of which are of thoughts, ideas, plans and connections. A skin-macerated white made with an endless landscape of varieties named as grüner veltliner, riesling, chardonnay, zierfandler, weißburgunder, sauvignon blanc, rotgipfler, traminer, weißburgunder, muskateller and also gemischter satz - which means who knows how many more. Also non-vintage which makes for matching grape to vintage impossible. But the vintages represented are 2022 (45 percent), 2021 (35) 2020 (9), 2019 (4) and 2018 (7). Not sure if this is serious or just fun so will go with the latter because cleanliness is next to Gluegglich-ness and easy drinking is the order of the delicious day. On Seven is a relatively new boutique Niagara winery owned by passionate wine aficionados Vittorio & Sula De Stefano. The De Stefanos bought an abandoned 7 acre vineyard (hence the name) in 2009 in Four Mile Creek, and under the guidance of consultant viticulturist and founding winemaker Peter Gamble, prepped the site for 3 years before replanting in 2014. The heavy clay loams are laced with calcareous deposits, and sloped north to maintain freshness. The philosophy from the beginning was to be 100% organic certified, and produce wines with minimal intervention.

This is primarily Dijon clone 76, planted 2014, with a small percentage of grapes from their 2015 planting of Dijon clone 95, and the 2018 plantings of Dijon clone 96. This was whole cluster pressed and transferred to French oak barrels (25% new) for native fermentation and 20 months aging. This hand labelled paint pen bottle is one of only 30 cases, and a barrel selection from the 2021 vintage. Pouring a glowing lemon hue this powerful white is sharpened with reduction, giving a pencil shavings edge to its white peach, green apple fruit. Light toast, marzipan, and honeycomb season, while the lees-deck palate bases this creamy, powerful white, lingering on the finish with crushed stones. Certainly a step up from their classic 2021 The Pursuit, drinking now, but worth some time ahead in your cellar.

"It's rare to see this kind of richness delivered with such precision. This is the debut bottling, at over $100, of a best barrel selection. It pours bright yellow gold. The nose is very generous and complex with golden peach, hazelnut, buttered garlic toast, lanolin, lemon and nutmeg spice. It is medium-full bodied, rich yet somehow so delicate and poised at the same time. Something rarely encountered, perhaps in Grand Cru white Burgundy. Carrying on his family's winemaking tradition, after studying oenology at Austria’s Klosterneuburg University and working in Germany and Napa, Fred Loimer took over the winery from his father in 1997. His 80 hectares of vineyards began conversion to biodynamics in 2006, and all are certified today. Unlike most of his peers, Fred vinifies his wine to dryness, like this concentrated, stony, older vine grüner from vineyard around Langenlois, growing on loess and gneiss soils at 200-400m. Predominantly fermented and aged in large stainless tanks (5% in large oak barrels), this rested 4 months on lees before blending and bottling.

Juicy pink grapefruit, lime zest, honeycrisp apple floods the palate, dusted with white pepper, and finishing with a grapefruit twist. A friendly, smart white and excellent introduction to Kamptal and Loimer. *New label this vintage.

The Pursuit Chardonnay

On Seven is a relatively new boutique Niagara winery owned by passionate wine aficionados Vittorio & Sula De Stefano. The De Stefanos bought an abandoned 7 acre vineyard (hence the name) in 2009 in Four Mile Creek, and under the guidance of consultant viticulturist and founding winemaker Peter Gamble, prepped the site for 3 years before replanting in 2014. The heavy clay loams are laced with calcareous deposits, and sloped north to maintain freshness. The philosophy from the beginning was to be 100% organic certified, and produce wines with minimal intervention.

This is primarily Dijon clone 76, planted 2014, with a small percentage of grapes from their 2015 planting of Dijon clone 95, and the 2018 plantings of Dijon clone 96. This was whole cluster pressed and transferred to French oak barrels (25% new) for native fermentation and 20 months aging. The wines were coarsely filtered before bottling.

Lush white peach, nectarine, and yellow apple fill a creamy palate, seasoned subtly by oak, and plumped with gentle lees. There's a lingering river stone freshness on the finish of this stylish wine, drinking now or with time ahead. The 2022 harvest yielded zero fruit for On Seven, so this is the first time we're seeing this label since 2021.

This gamay came from a single vineyard in St. Germain Nuelles, and 50 year old vines rooted in calcareous soils. It was native fermented and carbonically macerated before aging in barrel 9 months, with minimal sulphur added before bottling. 3450 bottles and 40 magnums made.

Perfumed peony, fragrant wildflowers, wild raspberry runs the length of this slight palate, with fine, lightly sticky tannins hugging the sides, and a buoyant, lofted acidity sailing this through a saline finish. So charming, much like the hare on the label.

From 70 year old gamay in southern Bojo's Charnay, rooted its calcareous clay soils, this was carbonically macerated, with 7 months in oak, prior to a tightening moon phase rest in stainless, and bottling with low sulphur. A characterful charmer, much like the hare on the label.

Pretty and perfumed raspberry, cherry, and wildflowers roll across the palate, dusted with pink peppercorn, and lofted with an easy, buoyant acidity. Tannins are finely sticky, framing this and welcoming charcuterie / grilled sausages. #gogamaygo

This is Antonio Maçanita's Clockwork Orange. Arinto, Roupeiro, Verdelho, Antão Vaz, Alincante Branco, Trincadeira-das-Pratas, Fernão Pires make up the Alentejo coferment blend, from various granite-soiled vineyards and vines 15-50 years old. After the first whole bunch pressing, 10-15% of the remaining juice macerated on the skins for a week, and then was pressed again and reunited with the whole, where it native fermented. It remained in stainless on lees until it was bottled, unfiltered, the following fall.

Pouring a hazy golden orange hue, this textural white draws honeycomb, apricot, bergamot, lime peel, and marmalade along the buzzy palate, with a lingering salinity and citrus twist. Super smart, food-friendly, and balanced, this works for solo sipping or with foods.

Only 2% of Chinon is planted to white, so when you find a Chinon Blanc, you know you're in for a special Chenin Blanc experience. This organically farmed Chenin Blanc comes mostly from Ligré's chalky, limestone clay soils, and was native cool fermented in stainless, to preserve the bright, fresh, very special character of Chenin on limestone.

Château Haut-Blanville is a family-owned Languedoc wine estate that was founded in 1997 by Béatrice & Bernard Nivollet. Their 70 ha of vineyards extend across The Grés de Montpellier AOP, stretching from the Hérault middle valley to the Vidourle, and from the Mediterranean in the south to the Pic Saint-Loup in the north. Wines are produced naturally, without the use of any additions except a minimal amount of sulphur upon bottling. From stony clay-limestone soils, this Chardonnay blends in 5% Roussanne for additional fragrance and body. The Chardonnay is fermented in stainless steel and does not undergo MLF, whereas the Roussanne is barrel fermented with full MLF.

Merlettaie means lace, and the name of this wine pays homage to the lace workers of Offida, characteristic of these hills much like the Pecorino grape. From organic vineyards in Offida and Acquaviva Picena, at 280m, this was native fermented and aged in 25hL Slavonian oak barrels over a period of 8-10 weeks, where it remained for 6 months on lees prior to bottling.

Fragrant white peach, quince, lemon, and pine nut run along the stony palate, with a buzzy tangerine pithiness structuring, and a lingering salinity to the finish. Mouthwatering and smart, and an ideal partner to seafood dishes.
