Bruno Giacosa
Bruno Giacosa
Piemonte, Italy
One of the legendary winemakers of the world, Bruno Giacosa crafted the most prestigious single-vineyard Barolo and Barbaresco wines during a career that spanned nearly eight decades. He joined the family business at the age of 15, representing the third generation of his Langhe winemaking family. Giacosa’s unfailing pursuit of perfection, his unrivaled palate and his intimate knowledge of vineyards in the Langhe quickly drew recognition and helped establish Piedmont as a leading wine region. In 1980, Giacosa began to acquire prime parcels in Serralunga d’Alba, La Morra and Barbaresco to produce wines that are rightly regarded as the finest expressions of Nebbiolo. His legacy rests with daughter Bruna, who continues to uphold her father’s winemaking philosophy to respect traditional techniques while using the best of modern technology. The goal is for each distinguished site to produce articulate, unique wines.

Nebbiolo dAlba
Bruno Giacosa
Nebbiolo d'Alba
From various vineyards in the villages of Monteu Roero, Santo Stefano Roero, and Vezza d’Alba, and vines from 20-30 years, this was macerated in stainless and then aged 14 months in French oak. Wild raspberries, cherries, dried herbs, ferrous and tobacco stream through the savoury, medium bodied palate, framed with long, finely grippy black tea tannins. Quite structural and serious, yet certainly drinkable now.

Dolcetto dAlba
Bruno Giacosa
Dolcetto d'Alba
From select vineyards in the villages of Neive, Neviglie, Treiso and Alba, this youthful red was fermented and aged in stainless for 7 months. Finesse from the start, this opens with scented red florals, cherry, red currants, wrapped around a salted plum / cherry core, and finishing with a kiss of mineral salts and kirsch. Tannins are whisper fine, barely outing the perimeter of this medium-bodied red. There's a lightness and effortless here which makes drinking now easy. That said, the articulation of this wine means it will happily cellar over the next couple of years.

Dolcetto d'Alba Falletto
Falletto signifies Giacosa estate fruit, and this Dolcetto comes from their vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba and Lirano di Sinio. It was fermented and macerated over 10 days in stainless, where it remained for 6 months prior to bottling. Wild blackberry, black cherry, dried dark florals, is interwoven with brooding dark earth and vegetative notes, and wrapped with long, grippy tannins to a steely, cool finish. Much darker, more structured and savoury dolcetto.

Spumante Extra Brut
This traditional method sparkler of Pinot Nero comes from the Village of Casteggio, in Oltrepò Pavese, Pavia. It was vinified in stainless, with no MLF, before heading to bottle and 30 months’ rest on lees, prior to disgorge in December 2022, with 3.5 g/L dosage. Light lemon blossom, green apple skate through the sleek, slender palate, scented with delicate anise and white cherry. Very elegant, as expected from this iconic Piemontese producer.

Roero Arneis
From Roero’s sandy soils, and vines up to 26 years old, this Arneis was fermented and aged in stainless to preserve the delicate fruit. Fragrant orange blossoms, apricot, and quince waft across the stony spiced palate, lit with crunchy Asian pear acidity that hums on the lengthy finish. Very polished, and very smart.

Barolo Falletto Vigna La Rocche Riserva
Bruno Giacosa was a titan in the world of wine whose reputation transcended not only Piemonte but all of Italy. Purchased in 1980, the Falletto estate is comprised of 13 hectares (32 acres) in the commune of Serralunga d’Alba. Considered by Bruno Giacosa as the best area for producing elegant and long-lived Barolos, the Falletto vineyard is southwest facing on steep slopes of calcareaous clay soils in an amphitheater shape. The estate features a single plot known as Vigna Le Rocche, which contains the oldest vines and produces wines that are vinified and bottled separately from the rest of the estate.
“Roses and lavender with other flowers. Peaches. Glorious fruit of dark plums and ripe strawberries. This is dense and intense but there are layers of very fine tannins, like fine cashmere. Goes on for minutes. Opens in the mouth. Almost endless. Three years in cask and two years in bottle before January 2023 release. Give this at least five to six years.” - 98 points, JamesSuckling.com
"This year's top-end release from Bruno Giacosa is the 2017 Barolo Riserva Falletto Vigna Le Rocche (in the red label). Bottled in 2019, the wine stands apart thanks to a hot and dry growing season that Bruna Giacosa is very excited about. In fact, she prefers 2017 to 2015, although the two vintages do share similarities. This wine is very open-knit, and it reveals dark concentration in the form of ripe blackberry, candied cherry and spice. The tannins show a loose, granular quality that adds considerably to the textural impact of this Riserva. Drink 2025-2050.” - 97 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, August 24, 2023.

Bruno Giacosa was a titan in the world of wine whose reputation transcended not only Piemonte but all of Italy.
