Azores Wine Co. Rose
Azores Wine Co.
A Proibida Rosé
The proibida (prohibition) of this wine necessitating the pink line crossing out words here because this is an old vine/vineyard blend of Isabella, a hybrid grape that is not allowed for quality wine in the EU, and certainly looked down upon in the Azores and Portugal. However, winemaker Antonio Maçanita wanted to pay tribute to these old Isabella vines, once in abundance and with 200 years history on this volcanic island, before phylloxera ravaged through. From vineyards close to the sea, protected from the strong salty ocean winds by walls of rock known as currais, the slightly pressed grapes saw 3-6 hours of skin time before a native ferment and short rest in stainless.
Watermelon candy, pear blossoms are lifted with rhubarb acidity, sailing this to a sour crunchy plum finish. Salinity is rinsed throughout, leaving this light (11.5%) pink fresh and clean and ready for food pairings (think tapas).

Zharpí Prosecco Brut
Perlage is one of Italy’s first organic sparkling wineries. In the local dialect, zharpì is a term transcribed as vine pruning, reflecting this wine’s connection to the vineyard and those who work the vines.
This glera is bright and shining with pear blossoms, white peach, and tangerine, finishing crisp and thankfully dry. A very smart and modern take.

Reserve Pinot Noir Réserve
Blanville
Pinot Noir Réserve
Château Haut-Blanville is a family-owned Languedoc wine estate that was founded in 1997 by Béatrice & Bernard Nivollet. Their 70 ha of vineyards extend across The Grés de Montpellier AOP, stretching from the Hérault middle valley to the Vidourle, and from the Mediterranean in the south to the Pic Saint-Loup in the north. Wines are produced naturally, without the use of any additions except a minimal amount of sulphur upon bottling. This pinot noir comes from the limestone and basalt soils of Pézenas at 100-150m, on a cool, north-facing single vineyard.
Fragrant blackberry, plump plum flood a juicy palate, with perfumed baking spices to season, and fine, supple tannins to frame. There's an alluring stony underlay here, reflective of the profound soils of Pézenas. Great value.

Rosé de Blancs 1er Cru Brut
Didier, part of the third generation of the Gimonnet family, oversees the winemaking of their family winery, based in Cuis, in the heart of the Côtes de Blancs. This wine, like all of their chardonnay-centric wines, is laser focused. According to Didier, he wants a rosé that tastes like a blanc de blancs with colour. "Powerful chardonnay." It certainly succeeds. My bottle was from 2021 vintage (no reserves) and sources fruit from Chouilly, Cramant, Oger, Cuis, and Vertus, adding 7% Bouzy still pinot noir. It was disgorged in February 2023, with 5.5 g/L. Singing with blood orange, pink grapefruit, subtle crushed florals, and Rainier cherry across a brisk, green apple and bright lemon core, this streaks like an arrow through a chalky finish. Beautiful energy here in this supremely food-friendly wine.
"Balanced and minerally, with the crisp, lacy mousse carrying delicate notes of white cherry, pink grapefruit pith, blanched almond and fleur de sel. Refreshing. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Disgorged July 2023. Drink now.”- 91 points, Wine Spectator

Cuis 1er Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs
Understated and classic, this 1er Cru always impresses with its cut and precision. Didier, the third generation of the Gimonnet vine growing family, oversees the winemaking of this Côtes des Blancs grower champagne house based in Cuis, with 30 HA owned. Like all of their chardonnay-centric wines, Cuis, the signature of the domaine, is crystalline and bright, driving through to the lingering finish. Based on 2021, this has 30% reserves from 6 previous vintages, uniquely stored in 750mL bottles. The base was fermented in stainless, with full MLF, and this bottle was disgorged in April 2023 with 6-ish g/L.
"There's a subtle succulence to this graceful Champagne, framing flavors of peach skin, ripe pear, Marcona almond and orchard blossoms. The fine, detailed mousse is raw silk–like in texture. Finishes with minerally fleur de sel and oyster shell notes. Disgorged December 2023. Drink now through 2029.” - 93 points, Wine Spectator, November 30, 2024

Crémant du Jura Blanc de Blancs Coeur de Chardonnay
During his presidency of the Société de viticulture du Jura, Pierre Rolet was instrumental in the creation of the AOC Crémant du Jura in 1995. The Coeur de Chardonnay is a selection of the winery's best sparkling lots from Arbois and Côtes du Jura. The wine was whole cluster pressed and fermented at low temperature (18°C) in stainless, with no MLF, and spent a minimum of 40 months on lees, with a dosage of 4 g/L. Green apple, lemon brioche, and fresh bread dough is studded with flake salts, and lingering with shining lemon pith and peel. Quite complete, and super smart, drinking well now and with time ahead.

Special Club Cuis 1er Cru Blanc de Blancs
Didier, the third generation of the Gimonnet vine growing family, oversees the winemaking of this Côtes des Blancs grower champagne house based in Cuis, with 30 HA owned. In 2018, Didier Gimonnet had enough wine in excess to try a single Special Club Cuis, without disturbing the integrity of his flagship 1er cru bottling. This comes from two older plots, and was fermented in stainless with full MLF. It was disgorged in June 2023. Powerful and savoury, woven with perfumed lemon pith and peel, and a medicinal herbal vein throughout. Structural and powerful, yet graceful and finessed, gripped with chalk which lingers on the finish. Such a beauty. Though a proper Special Club, due to glass shortages they were unable to use the traditional and marked Special Club bottle, so they were given dispensation to use a different bottle for this vintage.
"Vivid acidity creates a mouthwatering frame for flavors of Honeycrisp apple and nectarine, with pickled ginger, chamomile and blanched almond accents. Lacy in texture, this shows focus and length in a finely balanced, bright and graceful package. Disgorged June 2023. Drink now through 2035. 621 cases made.” - 94 points, Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator
"A youthful and very minerally Blanc de Blancs with excellent drive and purity. Lovely white flower and lemon zest notes emerge. Long and very focused. A cuvee of 85% from the Croix Blanche and 15% from Les Roualles. Bottled on the 9th May 2019 and disgorged in April 2023. Drink or hold." - 94 points, Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com

Special Club Cramant Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs
Special Club (Club Trésors) is an invite-only group of 25ish grower champagne vignerons, recognized for the quality of their wines. A Special Club champagne is different from their other cuvées, can only be made in outstanding vintage years, and is packaged in the special distinctive bottle. The 2017 Cramant came from a handful of their plots from 40-100 years old, was fermented in stainless, with full MLF, and spent 5 years sur lattes before disgorgement in summer 2023 with 4 g/L. Tight lemon pith, green apple, and meringue wrap around a creamy core, and stretch long on the chalky palate. Finely boned and structural, this has a delicate, graceful, old vine power, finishing with lingering salinity.
"Pie crust, chalk, grapefruit and nutmeg on the nose of this chalky, minerally Champagne. Tight and driven, with sharp acidity and very fine bubbles. Delicious sea salt and citrus notes come through at the end. 100% chardonnay from Caramant. 3 g/L dosage. Disgorged February 2024. Drink or hold.” - 95 points, Claire Nesbitt, JamesSuckling.com

Oenophile 1er Cru Blanc de Blancs Non Dosé
Oenophile is the same cuvée as Fleuron, but with zero dosage. Didier Gimonnet believes dosage is an important part of vinification and Champagne, so is typically against the style, although he was one of the first to make a 0 dosage champagne back in 1985. This is from Cramant, Chouilly, Oger, and Cuis, fermented in stainless with full MLF. It was disgorged in October 2023. Like all their wines, this is precise and poised, though this particular cuvée streaks across the palate like a lightning bolt. Smouldering stones, chalk, green apple, and lemon pith rule the taut, straight palate, finishing with a lingering buzzy salinity. Electric. 7500 bottles produced.
"For the extremely warm year this is remarkably fresh with very pure lemon blossom and white flower character. A thread of delicate chalky minerality runs through the focused palate, which the fine mousse accents beautifully. A cuvee of wines that are 45% from Cramant, 30% Chouilly, 22% Cuis and 3% Oger. Disgorged in February 2023. Drink or hold.” - 93 points, Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com

Fleuron 1er Cru Blanc de Blancs
Fleuron, meaning flagship, was created to capture the spirit of the vintage, and represent the year. In 2019, the blend included Cramant, Chouilly, and Cuis, highlighting the texture of the north of the Côtes des Blancs. As always, this was fermented in stainless, with full MLF. It was disgorged in October 2023 with 5 g/L. Smoked stone, crisp green apple, deep chalk and a lemon latticework are woven throughout a very fine, long, lacy finish. Quite smart, drinking beauty now and in future, and a lovely fingerprint for 2019.
"An elegant blanc de blancs, showing a finely detailed mousse and lithe, lively acidity. Apple blossom, chalky mineral and oyster shell notes are enticing aromatics lacing flavors of beeswax, poached quince and pear, and biscuit as they expand on the creamy palate and through the lasting finish. This offers the feel of an aperitif style, with the concentration and focus of a more serious example. Disgorged July 2024. Drink now through 2039.” - 94 points, Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator

NAT’Cool! Rosé
NAT’Cool is Dirk Niepoort's line of wines that are low-intervention, low-alcohol, available only in a 1L format, affordable, and highly smashable. Showcasing their embossed NAT'Cool! bottles, this rosé is a mixed field blend from the Douro’s schistous soils, as well as a mix of recent vintages, resting in large French barrels over 3 years, without the addition of SO2. The new NV format sports a new front label as well (lacking the sweet hearts of 2020 vintage). In fact, there is nothing save for a super tiny "rosé" on the back of this green glassed bottle to even indicate this is a pink wine.
Pouring a blushing peach hue, this medium bodied rosé streams crushed florals, dried roses, and spices along the lees-slicked palate, finishing with a dusting of toasted spice. Feels bigger than its 11.5% frame.

Bodegas Hermanos Pecina Pecina
Bodegas Hermanos Peciña
Señorio de P. Peciña Tinto Crianza
Bodegas Hermanos Peciña is firmly planted in traditional Rioja, one of perhaps a dozen of producers adhering to the tenets passed down through generations. This includes long aging in mostly neutral American oak of 4-10 years, regular open-air racking by hand (called trasiego), and then further aging in bottle often well beyond the specifications required by the DO. Founder Pedro Peciña had over two decades of working in Rioja Alta before opening his own Bodega in 1992.
This wine is a blend of Tempranillo (95%), Graciano (3%), and Garnacha (2%), from various calcareous-clay vineyards, and vines averaging 40 years old. The wine ages 2 years in used American oak barrels, and 1.5 years in bottle prior to release.
Crushed cherries, cassis, leather, and toast work through this fuller red, with a stony limestone lift to counter the heftiness of the wine. Traditionally styled, but with a modern frame.

Aphros
Aphros
Loureiro
Vasco Croft is one of the pioneering biodynamic vintners in Portugal, and Aphros is his personal project. From Vinho Verde's Lima subregion, this loureiro spent time on skins before pressing into stainless for native fermentation (no MLF) and a few months ageing on lees (no bâtonnage) before filtration and bottling.
Very lean and light (10.5%) with crunchy green apple, Asian pear, green spring veg streaking across a slight, saline frame, finishing with a white grapefruit twist. Enjoy this snappy little white with fish / veg tapas.
"The Aphros by Vasco Croft, a.k.a. Portugal’s wine Warhol is a biodynamic farmed and executed varietal dreamer and charmer that has come a loving way over the last 10 years. Croft and team have honed their witchcraft, found the sweet spot and now elevate loureiro to heights it rarely imagines. The concentration is now above and beyond, the lemon intensity fulfilling and the honey bees’ nectar makes it all possible - and come together. The wine is now emulsified, in locomotion, smouldering and commanding. Hard to find a substitute for an Aphros VV. Drink 2025-2028. Tasted May 2025." - 91 points, Michael Godel, WineAlign.com
"The 2023 Loureiro is similar to the Ten. Its from the direct pressing of the grapes and fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts at a slightly higher temperature, so it's a little less exuberant but with a subtle note of honey and beeswax intermixed with the white fruit and flowers. It didn't go through malolactic fermentation and has slightly higher maturity, with 10.5% alcohol, and better balance. 55,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2024 after two months with lees but without bâtonnage. Drink 2024-2027.” - 90 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, March 27, 2025

Albarino Rias Baixas Val do Salnes Zarate Zárate Albariño
Bodegas Zárate
Albariño
Founded in 1707, the family owned Zarate estate is located in Rias Baixas' lauded Val do Salnés subregion. Their sloping, weathered granite vineyards are translated via albariño, a grape intrinsically associated with the estate. 7th generation Eulogio Pomares runs this historic bodega today, farming almost fully biodynamically. This is from 30 year old vines, fermented native, and with three months on the lees in stainless.
Perfumed peach, quince, and pear glide through the medium palate, lit with a buzzy granitic grip that sails this through a lingering saline finish. Such energy and vibrancy in this benchmark Albariño.
"The nose of the 2024 Zarate shows something savory, with a clear influence from the sea breeze and an almost salty twist in the finish. This is, of course, their flagship Albariño that always shows the character of the year, here very complete, with good ripeness, 13% alcohol and a very balanced mouthfeel. This is clean and precise, harmonious and elegant, with the chalky, slightly grainy finish from the granite soils. It's superb at this price point. Merlettaie means lace, and the name of this wine pays homage to the lace workers of Offida, characteristic of these hills much like the Pecorino grape. From organic vineyards in Offida and Acquaviva Picena, at 280m, this was native fermented and aged in 25hL Slavonian oak barrels over a period of 8-10 weeks, where it remained for 6 months on lees prior to bottling.

Donatella Cinelli Colombini
Brunello di Montalcino
From the organic Casato Prime Donne property, this Brunello comes from vineyards on the cooler northern side, around 225 m altitude, on soils rich in clay and silt. The native fermentation takes place in small stainless and bare concrete, after which it rests in older tonneaux and big barrels for at least 2 years, followed by a period of at least 6 months in bottles.
Black cherry, fragrant raspberries and balsam are woven through this structural, polished wine, framed with long, firm, sticky but well-integrated tannins, and seasoned with light toast. Drinking well now, and will continue to do so over the short term (especially with wild boar ragu).
"The Donatella Cinelli Colombini 2020 Brunello di Montalcino (a certified organic wine with 43,400 bottles released) offers dark fruit aromas that are accented by tarry smoke, underbrush and hints of campfire ash. It draws its fruit from over 10 hectares of estate vines. The wine delivers broad-brush intensity with a rich texture that wraps smoothly over the palate, giving this wine a generous yet also accessible personality. It ends with sweet oak tones. DOC Orcia is produced in 13 municipalities between Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This is 60/40 sangiovese/merlot from the historic estate, built by Donatella Cinelli Colombini's ancestors in 1592 (reflected by the red lion on the label). This organic younger vine red spends 6 months in medium / large oak.
Baked cherry, plum is scented with balsam and gripped with finely gritty tannins, finishing with a warming kiss of kirsch. Partner this rustic red with winter stews and braises.
"Dusty in character and darkly floral, the 2021 Orcia Leone Rosso slowly emerges with an alluring bouquet of dried violets, stone dust and wild blueberries. This is soothingly roundand supple, with accents of tart red berry fruits offsetting silken textures as a bitter tinge of clove emerges toward the close. This tapers off with a chewy sensation and tart blackberry concentration, leaving edgy tannins to resonate. A year or two of cellaring will be necessary for the 2021 to blossom fully. The Leone Rosso is a blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Merlot. Drink 2026-2030.” - 91 points, Eric Guido, Vinous

Grüner Veltliner NATURAL
NATURAL is Fritz Wieninger's experimental range of wines, still biodynamic, as is his family's Weingut Wieninger. This is the only NATURAL wine done in stainless, and here it spends 3.5 months on skins prior to bottling without fining, filtration, or sulphur. This Grüner Veltliner comes from an old vineyard in Ried Gabrissen on Vienna's Bisamberg, a sunny south-facing location on loess, with high lime content and a prominent gravel band in the higher part of the vineyard.
Juicy and bright with white grapefruit, crunchy yellow and green apple, white melon, and crystalline lemon that lingers on the saline and white pepper finish. Lovely purity and energy in this slender white.

Viñas Serranas
Ciclón Rufete
From older vines rooted in granite and schist terraces around 650m, this Rufete was native fermented with 15% whole bunch in small tanks, with 3 weeks maceration. It was finished primarily in French barrels for 10 months.
Perfumed cherry, crunchy plum, raspberries, are framed with fine downy / grippy tannins, wrapping around a juicy core, and finishing super saline. An earlier piece has kept alcohol low and bright (12.67%), encouraging taking this with a slight chill. 15,000 bottles produced.
"They used most of the red Rufete grapes to produce the 2022 Ciclón, as the year was very dry and low yielding and they are in a transition toward village reds. It has grapes from different villages and soils, with the plots fermented and matured separately. It fermented destemmed, and two-thirds of the volume matured in barrel for 10 months. Rufete keeps low alcohol (this is 12.5%), and in 2022, they harvested very early because of the heat. This has good freshness with a nose dominated by red berry fruit, herbs and some flowers. It has some slightly rustic tannins, the oak is not noticeable, and the wine feels young and primary, clean and tasty. 15,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023. Drink 2024-2028.” - 92 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Le Ragnaie
Le Ragnaie
Rosso di Montalcino
Unlike many Rosso di Montalcino that often is composed of the inferior barrels for Brunello, this is a site-specific bottling treated every step along the way like Riccardo's Brunello offerings. The Castelnuovo vineyard is situated in Castelnuovo dell'Abate on a steep hillside with Mastrojanni's Vigna Schiena d'Asino on one side and Poggio di Sotto on the other. After a long, cool natural fermentation in concrete, this is racked to 25-50L Slavonian vats where it rests quietly on lees for 24 months prior to bottling with no fining.
Fragrant and fresh with black cherries, balsamic, herbs and spices. Medium-bodied, it is round and smooth on the palate, to a lengthy, bitter cherry finish. Elegant now, it will continue to gain in complexity with a few years in the cellar.
“Here's a charming wine from Le Ragnaie. The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is released one year later than its peers after spending two years in Slavonian botte and extra time in cement. That extra year translates into seamless fruit integration. In truth, the wine is on the timid side now, but I am confident that it will flesh out and blossom aromatically with another year or two of bottle age. It excels in terms of its balanced freshness, and there are pretty flavors of sour berry and cassis on the silky finish. Fruit is assembled from various vineyard parcels. Production is 39,000 bottles. Drink date 2025–2038.” - 94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
